At Daytona Beach, Florida, Tony Stewart surprised many by returning to the Daytona International Speedway Media Center on Thursday, nearly ten years after he declared he would never race in NASCAR again. This unexpected comeback centers on a one-time Truck Series race with Kaulig Racing, offering Stewart a rare chance to compete once more while sharing the experience with his family.
Stewart’s Role Shift: From Owner Back to Driver
Unlike previous media appearances where Stewart participated as a team owner, this visit marked a return to his roots as a driver. The opportunity to race again, even just once, came with a unique personal significance. Stewart’s wife, Leah Pruett, who had never witnessed him drive in a NASCAR race before, expressed surprise at the decision, leading Stewart to humorously question her sanity. Yet, he emphasized how meaningful it was for his family to finally experience this together.
“I think it’s an opportunity that she never had to literally come to a NASCAR event and watch me drive in NASCAR,”
Stewart explained. “We get to have Leah here, and we get the cherry on top. We get Dominic here, too, who will have never had that opportunity, obviously.
So we kind of get a two-for-one deal, getting my family to be a part of this with us.”
Reflecting on Stewart’s NASCAR Journey and Recent Focus
Stewart’s last race behind the wheel took place at the 2016 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, where he concluded an acclaimed Hall of Fame driving career. Though he remained active as a team owner until leaving NASCAR after the 2024 season, his main focus shifted toward his NHRA drag racing pursuits. During that period, Stewart connected with Pruett, starting their relationship in 2019 and welcoming their child, Dominic, in 2024.
Because of the timing, Pruett had not been able to attend a NASCAR race with Stewart prior to this momentous return. Now, Daytona International Speedway will host their first family NASCAR weekend, complete with pre-race ceremonies, making it a significant milestone personally and professionally.
Clarifying the Nature of Stewart’s NASCAR Return
Despite the excitement surrounding this appearance, Stewart was insistent that this comeback is strictly limited to the Daytona event. He made it clear there are no additional races planned beyond this one.
“I’m not planning anything else,” Stewart confirmed firmly.
… It is one and done. That’s what we said in the press deal.
This definitive statement assures fans and the racing community that his role as a driver remains a special, singular occasion, allowing Stewart to reconnect with the sport on his own terms while creating cherished memories with his family.
