At the EchoPark Speedway in Atlanta on Sunday night, Bubba Wallace nearly reached Victory Lane again this season but finished eighth after a crucial overtime misstep. The 23XI Racing driver demonstrated his potential to dominate races, sparking former NASCAR driver Kyle Petty’s confident prediction for Wallace’s upcoming success this season.
Bubba Wallace’s Strong Performance and Kyle Petty’s Take
Bubba Wallace led 46 laps at Atlanta, showing a commanding presence on the track. However, a miscalculated move during the overtime period allowed competitors to pass him, resulting in Wallace dropping several positions. Reflecting on the race, Kyle Petty remarked,
“He controlled the race from the start. He lost control there on that one block. On that one block, he lost the plot of the race a little bit.”
Despite this setback, Petty emphasized that Wallace’s performance signaled a return to the top form he showed at the Brickyard 400 last season. He stated,
“But if you look at it, it’s as good a race as Bubba has driven maybe since the Brickyard. The Brickyard was a phenomenal race for Bubba Wallace. But that’s the type of races that Bubba can put together, and I believe he will constantly and consistently put together as we go into this year. And we’re going to see him in victory lane multiple times this year.”
Wallace’s victory at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s Brickyard 400 last year was a significant milestone. Petty’s confidence in Wallace’s ability to replicate such high-level performances throughout the season aligns with Wallace’s recent showings at Daytona and Atlanta, signaling a breakout during the Bubba Wallace NASCAR season.
Insights from Wallace on His Atlanta Finish
During the crucial overtime laps, Wallace attempted to block rival drivers by moving to the outside lane but inadvertently left too much room on the inside. This allowed other racers passing him through the gap, leading to an eighth-place finish as his teammate Tyler Reddick secured the win.

Wallace reflected on the incident, saying,
“I didn’t think I moved up that much to allow — to put myself up top. Unfortunate, but what a race car we had today.”
Though disappointed to miss out on Victory Lane, Wallace expressed satisfaction that Toyota, the manufacturer for 23XI Racing, claimed the race win. Currently, Wallace sits second in the points standings with 85 points, trailing Reddick by 40 points.
Strong Start Puts 23XI Racing in a Leading Position
The beginning of the 2026 season has been highly promising for 23XI Racing. With both Bubba Wallace and Tyler Reddick delivering impressive performances, the team has set a challenging pace for their rivals. Their early success has already forced other competitors to play catch-up as the season progresses.
As the Bubba Wallace NASCAR season unfolds, the driver’s ability to harness moments of brilliance and avoid critical errors will be key. With Kyle Petty’s optimistic outlook and Wallace’s evident talent, the racing community awaits multiple victories from the young driver this year.
