Jimmie Johnson Joins as Honorary Crew Chief for Indy Legend

Seven-time NASCAR Cup champion Jimmie Johnson will serve as an honorary crew chief for Dario Franchitti when the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series visits St. Petersburg on February 28. This appearance coincides with Franchitti’s first NASCAR start in 17 years, marking a notable return on a road course that the Truck Series is racing at for the first time in 31 years.

Tricon Garage’s Role and Johnson’s Advisory Contribution

Tricon Garage has named Jerame Donley as the official crew chief for the No. 1 Toyota team at St. Petersburg, handling all pit box responsibilities. Johnson’s role is primarily ceremonial and advisory, offering support and guidance from a veteran’s perspective. A Tricon Garage representative confirmed this setup, emphasizing Johnson’s backing role during the event.

Johnson Expresses Excitement About Collaboration

Johnson shared his enthusiasm about the partnership ahead of the race, stating,

“I’m super excited, Tricon has incredible equipment. They’ve put together a really nice opportunity for us to run Dario.”

– Jimmie Johnson, NASCAR Champion

The Unique Friendship Behind the Partnership

The connection between Johnson and Franchitti goes back many years, with Johnson encouraging the multiple IndyCar champion to take on a Truck Series ride. Franchitti agreed to race only under the condition that Johnson would be involved at the pit box, a request Johnson gladly accepted. Their mutual experience spans both NASCAR and IndyCar, with Franchitti boasting four IndyCar titles and three Indianapolis 500 wins.

Familiar Faces and Past Collaborations in the Garage

Beyond Johnson and Franchitti’s bond, Johnson also has a history with crew chief Jerame Donley. The two worked together during their time at Hendrick Motorsports, and Donley has ties to Johnson’s Legacy Motor Club, having led Ty Dillon’s No. 42 Chevrolet team in 2022. This familiarity reinforces the collaborative environment as they prepare for St. Petersburg.

Johnson’s Expanding Involvement in Off-Road Racing

In addition to his honorary crew chief duties, Johnson will participate in the BFGoodrich Mint 400, an off-road desert race near Las Vegas taking place from March 4 to 8. This event features over 50 classes, including Unlimited Trucks, bikes, UTVs, and vintage Volkswagen Bugs. Johnson is scheduled to drive the No. 84 Carvana 1Nine Industries-built Trick Truck for Terrible Herbst Motorsports.

Looking Ahead: Johnson’s Final NASCAR Cup Appearance

While Johnson’s current commitments span several racing disciplines, he has confirmed that the next Daytona 500 will mark his final NASCAR Cup Series start. This announcement signals the end of his part-time participation in the Cup Series and a shift in his racing career going forward.
