New Zealand-born NASCAR driver Shane van Gisbergen shared his thoughts during an interview with John Newby as his recent documentary aired. The film, titled Runaway Kiwi, highlights his remarkable shift from Supercars racing to NASCAR and provides a glimpse into the person behind the wheel. While van Gisbergen expressed enjoyment in discussing his family on camera, he emphasized his desire to shield his private life from public scrutiny.
The 20-minute documentary was produced by Safety Culture in cooperation with NASCAR and Trackhouse Racing and is available on YouTube. It explores how van Gisbergen’s upbringing and personal values shaped his career, emphasizing the teamwork essential to his successes on the track.
Van Gisbergen’s Thoughts on Privacy and Family
During the interview, van Gisbergen opened up about the balance between public exposure and private life. He acknowledged the challenges of the modern era where people have widespread access to athletes but revealed his preference for maintaining certain boundaries.
“I don’t really like doing it, I guess. In this day and age, people have so much access to you. I love people knowing more about my racing life, but I love going away, going home and no one knowing what I do, as well, is kind of cool.”
He also reflected on the enjoyable moments captured in the documentary.
“There’s still some things you like to keep private, but it was cool to show off our cars, I guess; my relationship with Dad and how much fun we still have hanging out. Yeah, I think he talked a lot about mom and stuff, so yeah, it was pretty cool,”
Shane van Gisbergen’s NASCAR Career Milestones
Van Gisbergen made an impressive debut in NASCAR in 2023 at the Chicago Street Course, driving for Trackhouse Racing and winning the event. Following this achievement, he secured a full-time position for the 2024 Xfinity Series with Kaulig Racing, finishing the season in 12th place. Subsequently, he advanced to the NASCAR Cup Series with Trackhouse Racing, where he dominated the road course races, winning five out of six.
Rising Star Connor Zilisch Challenges Van Gisbergen
As the NASCAR teams prepare for the upcoming race at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA), fellow Trackhouse Racing driver Connor Zilisch has openly expressed his competitive spirit against van Gisbergen. Zilisch, who races in the Xfinity Series, has previously outperformed van Gisbergen on similar circuits and is eager to show his pace at COTA.
Despite van Gisbergen’s road course victories in the Cup Series, the youthful #88 Chevy driver remains confident in his abilities.
“I got the chance to race against him a few times toe-to-toe in the O’Reilly Series, and I think those cars are a little bit different for him, so it’s not a complete comparison, but I feel like I’ve been able to run with him in those.”
“We were teammates in the Corvette in the [Daytona] 24 Hours, and I felt like I was as fast as him in that. So, personally, I feel like I can do it—but putting an entire race together and being as consistent and not making mistakes like him is where it’s all going to come together,”
Upcoming Texas Grand Prix: Expectations and Broadcast Details
The DuraMax Texas Grand Prix Powered by RelaDyne is set for Sunday, March 1, 2026, featuring a 95-lap race at COTA. Broadcasting outlets FOX, PRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, and HBO Max will cover the event live starting at 3:30 p.m. ET. Last year, Christopher Bell of Joe Gibbs Racing took the victory, while van Gisbergen finished in sixth place, underlining his competitive edge on road courses.
Implications of the Documentary and Competitive Dynamics
Shane van Gisbergen’s documentary offers fans a rare look into the personal facets of a driver known mostly for his on-track accomplishments. By maintaining a level of privacy while allowing glimpses of his family and racing life, the documentary may deepen public appreciation for him beyond his victories. Meanwhile, the rising challenge from teammates like Connor Zilisch hints at an evolving competitive landscape within Trackhouse Racing, with younger drivers eager to claim their spot.
As van Gisbergen continues to solidify his presence in NASCAR’s top tiers and competitors push for supremacy, this period could prove pivotal in shaping his legacy and the team’s future successes.
