After dominating the 2025 O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, Connor Zilisch was expected to quickly make his mark in the Cup Series. However, following the first three races, he sits 32nd in the points standings, indicating a tougher adjustment than anticipated. Despite this, experienced driver Denny Hamlin has expressed confidence that better results are on the horizon for the young racer, especially on road courses where Zilisch is expected to become a serious challenger to Shane van Gisbergen’s dominance.
Hamlin remarked,
“I think SVG is about to have company in the road course domination bracket. He’s already got the racecraft to pass and make speed. He didn’t qualify well. Didn’t practice great. He had good speed, but not great speed. But as the weekend went on, he just kept getting better and faster. So, I think that we’re going to be talking about him for definitely a handful of races here,”
highlighting the potential Zilisch has shown despite early setbacks.
Entering a highly competitive environment often requires young drivers to acclimate, and Zilisch’s initial aggression at Atlanta showed his eagerness to find his rhythm. Although he had a series of average finishes early in his previous series, his performance took a decisive upswing at Charlotte in May, suggesting that he could follow a similar trajectory in the Cup Series.
Zilisch’s Resilience Revealed at COTA
At the Circuit of the Americas (COTA), Zilisch faced one of the most demanding road course corners at Turn 1, where he was spun out twice during the race. Recovering from these incidents to finish 14th demonstrated remarkable determination and skill, especially for a driver relatively new to the Cup Series. While not fully satisfied with his finishing position, Zilisch considered this race one of his best performances to date, stating,
“It was good. Just as a racecar driver, I’m not satisfied, but I showed I can do it.”
This display of grit points to his growing competence in high-pressure situations, and it raises anticipation about when he will reach Victory Lane—possibly for the first time on a road course.
Implications for van Gisbergen and Future Contests
Shane van Gisbergen, who recently lost a key race to Tyler Reddick, may be entering a challenging phase as Zilisch emerges as a strong competitor on road circuits. With Zilisch’s rapid improvement and Hamlin’s endorsement, the reigning road course ace can expect increased pressure from this rising talent in upcoming races. The evolving competition could significantly impact the dynamics of road course events in the Cup Series going forward.
