Alex Bowman Out with Vertigo; Anthony Alfredo Drives No. 48 Car

Alex Bowman will not be behind the wheel of the No. 48 car at the NASCAR event in Phoenix on Sunday, despite the car being part of the race. Bowman was diagnosed with vertigo, a condition that has forced him out of competition this week, continuing the disruption from last weekend when he had to leave his race mid-event at Circuit of the Americas. This time, a substitute driver will take over his duties during the race at Phoenix Raceway.

Health Concerns Keep Bowman off the Track Temporarily

Bowman’s health is the primary concern leading to his absence. Jeff Andrews, president of Hendrick Motorsports, shared insight on Bowman’s condition:

“Alex has worked very hard over the last several days,”

he said.

“We’re encouraged by the progress he’s making, but we have to prioritize his health above all else. It’s obviously frustrating for him because he’s a competitor and wants to be in the race car, especially at his home track. We’ll continue to support Alex and look forward to his return as soon as he’s medically cleared.”

This cautious approach highlights the team’s commitment to ensuring Bowman’s full recovery before he returns to racing.

Anthony Alfredo Steps in as Replacement Driver for No. 48

Replacing Bowman for this race is Anthony Alfredo, who will drive the No. 48 car at Phoenix Raceway. Alfredo expressed empathy for Bowman’s situation, stating,

“First and foremost, I hate it for Alex. No race car driver wants to be in the position where they have to give up their seat for a weekend to someone else. His health is definitely the most important thing, and I hope he gets back to the track soon.”

Alfredo also acknowledged the opportunity to work with the No. 48 team and crew chief Blake Harris, noting familiarity with the group through his existing relationship with Hendrick Motorsports and Chevrolet. His goal for the weekend is to deliver a solid performance and provide the team with valuable feedback for upcoming races.

Hendrick Motorsports Seeks to Protect Bowman’s Championship Eligibility

In response to Bowman’s absence, Hendrick Motorsports plans to request a medical waiver from NASCAR. This waiver would allow Bowman to maintain his eligibility for the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series championship despite missing races due to his health condition. This move ensures Bowman’s competitive status remains intact as he recovers.
