Kings Officially Exit Jonathan Kuminga Trade Talks After Move

The Golden State Warriors‘ efforts to trade Jonathan Kuminga have stalled largely due to his recent injury and ongoing negotiations involving Giannis Antetokounmpo. Although Kuminga remains on the trade block, the Warriors face increasing difficulty finding a suitable partner to meet their valuation as they reassess their options.

If Kuminga does not become part of a deal for Antetokounmpo or if that pursuit falls through, Golden State will still be compelled to trade Kuminga eventually because of his outstanding trade request.

Kings’ Latest Acquisition Diminishes Chances for Kuminga Deal

On the night the NBA trade deadline frenzy began, Sacramento Kings and Cleveland Cavaliers executed a notable transaction: the Kings acquired De’Andre Hunter in exchange for Keon Ellis and Dennis Schroder, with Dario Saric and two second-round draft picks sent to the Chicago Bulls as part of the agreement.

While the Kings did not secure their desired first-round pick through this trade, adding Hunter, a player with potential to rediscover strong form, alters Sacramento’s roster dynamics significantly.

NBA insider Jake Fischer explained that this acquisition likely removes Sacramento from contention in any forthcoming deal for Kuminga.

“Now, though, Sacramento wouldn’t seem to have much room for Kuminga to flourish on the perimeter anyway after its weekend deal with Cleveland. Word is that new Kings general manager Scott Perry indeed values De’Andre Hunter and coveted how much more size and scoring punch he theoretically adds to their lineup…” Jake Fischer

Despite a dip in shooting efficiency this season—Hunter is making just 30.8% of his three-point attempts—he still averages 14 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. His contract expires after next season, positioning him as a potential trade asset if he regains his form with Sacramento.

Given this situation, it is unlikely the Kings will pursue trading for Kuminga until at least one year from now, whereas the Warriors are expected to want to move him sooner.

Other Trade Prospects Appear Less Promising as NBA Landscape Shifts

Besides Sacramento, other teams such as the Phoenix Suns, Milwaukee Bucks, and Chicago Bulls have in the past expressed some interest in Kuminga. However, all these franchises have since undergone changes that affect their trading capacities or priorities.

The Warriors’ window to leverage Kuminga’s trade value may be closing quickly as the league’s environment evolves, and opportunities like Sacramento’s might have been missed. With so many variables at play, Golden State’s path forward regarding Kuminga’s trade status remains uncertain and tense.
