Hornets Land Coby White, Bringing Star Back to North Carolina

The Charlotte Hornets have secured guard Coby White, bringing the North Carolina native back home where he set the state’s high school scoring record and played college basketball with the Tar Heels. The Hornets agreed to a trade with the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday, sending Collin Sexton, Ousmane Dieng, and three future second-round picks in exchange for White and veteran guard Mike Conley Jr., according to a source familiar with the deal who spoke anonymously before league approval.

Additional Moves Strengthen Hornets’ Roster

In a separate trade, Charlotte obtained guard Tyus Jones and second-round picks in 2027 and 2028 from the Orlando Magic in exchange for cash considerations. This transaction helped Orlando reduce its luxury tax burden. Earlier the same day, the Hornets acquired Ousmane Dieng and a second-round pick from Oklahoma City as part of the Mason Plumlee deal, further reshaping the roster.

White’s Role and Potential Fit with a Rising Hornets Team

Coby White, selected seventh overall in the 2019 NBA draft, joins a Hornets squad aiming for its first playoff berth in a decade. Charlotte currently possesses a promising young core that has propelled the team to a seven-game winning streak. White posted an average of 18.6 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.7 rebounds per game last season with the Bulls, though his three-point shooting dipped to 34.6% compared to his career average of 36.8%.

While his specific position in Charlotte’s rotation remains uncertain, White adds another scoring option alongside players like LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller, Kon Knueppel, and Miles Bridges. The Hornets hold a 23-28 record overall and sit 11th in the Eastern Conference, but have gone 12-1 when starting Ball, Miller, Knueppel, Bridges, and center Moussa Diabate, all of whom are healthy and key contributors.

Knueppel has earned three consecutive Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month honors, and Miller was recently recognized as the conference Player of the Week, highlighting the team’s emerging talent.

Background on White and Impact of the Trade

At 25 years old, White spent seven seasons with the Bulls, averaging 15.4 points, 3.9 assists, and 3.7 rebounds per game during his tenure. Sexton, who the Hornets traded away, had served as Ball’s primary backup point guard and contributed off the bench with averages of 14.2 points and 3.7 assists in 42 games while shooting 39.3% from three-point range.

White holds North Carolina’s all-time high school scoring record with 3,573 points scored at Greenfield High School in Wilson from 2014 to 2018. He played one collegiate season at the University of North Carolina before turning professional and continues to engage with the local community by hosting youth basketball camps on campus during the offseason.

Outlook for the Hornets Moving Forward

This acquisition reflects the Hornets’ commitment to building a competitive team around their young stars, particularly LaMelo Ball, while adding experienced talent like White and Conley. As the team pushes toward postseason contention, White’s return to his home state and integration with Charlotte’s rising core could prove pivotal in shaping the Hornets’ future success.
