Bobby Portis Leads Hunger Challenge to Feed 1 Million Kids

In response to growing food insecurity, particularly among children, Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin has launched its 23rd Annual PB&J Challenge aimed at combating hunger locally. The campaign invites community members to donate money or contribute jars of peanut butter and jelly to help stock area food pantries.

This year’s objective is to gather enough donations to create the equivalent of one million peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Bobby Portis Jr., an NBA champion and Milwaukee Bucks player who serves on the Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin board, is once again spearheading the campaign as its ambassador.

Bobby Portis Jr. Shares Personal Connection to Hunger Issues

Portis Jr., who joined the Milwaukee Bucks in 2020, grew up in a single-parent household and personally understands the challenges families endure to provide basic needs. His role as ambassador focuses on raising both donations and awareness, urging community involvement in supporting those who face food insecurity.

“When I was a kid, having food on the table made it easier to focus on school, basketball, and just being a kid,”

Portis Jr. said.

“Not every child has that security, and that’s why this campaign hits home for me. The PB&J Challenge is a simple way to step up and make sure kids in our community have the fuel they need to succeed.”

Food Insecurity Affects One in Four Children in Milwaukee County

Recent data from Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap report reveals alarming figures, with one in six children across Eastern Wisconsin unsure of where their next meal will come from. The situation is even more severe in Milwaukee County, where nearly 25% of children experience food insecurity.

The PB&J Challenge, running from February 5 through March 31, is designed to supply children facing hunger with nutritious food necessary for their learning and development.

Donor Contributions Are Doubled Through Special Matching Program

During the campaign period, an anonymous donor is matching donations at a rate that doubles the impact, meaning every $5 donated provides the equivalent of 70 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. This matching opportunity increases the reach and effectiveness of contributions significantly.

Community Effort Aims to Support Vulnerable Children in Eastern Wisconsin

With the ongoing challenge of child hunger in Milwaukee and surrounding areas, initiatives like the PB&J Challenge, championed by Bobby Portis Jr., play a critical role in addressing immediate needs. This campaign not only helps feed children but also encourages greater community participation in alleviating food insecurity throughout Eastern Wisconsin.
