Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr spoke candidly about his challenging relationship with Jonathan Kuminga following the young forward’s trade to the Atlanta Hawks at the 2026 NBA trade deadline. Reflecting on their rocky partnership over recent seasons, Kerr expressed both appreciation for Kuminga’s character and hopes for the player’s future success with his new team, highlighting the complex nature of their professional journey together.
Kuminga’s Struggles and Trade Details
Jonathan Kuminga, drafted by the Warriors and a member of their 2022 championship-winning roster, saw a diminishing role in the team’s rotation in subsequent seasons. Despite a two-year contract extension secured in the 2025 offseason, Kuminga appeared in only 20 games this season and eventually requested a trade. As a result, Golden State traded him along with Buddy Hield to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Kristaps Porzingis, marking a significant shift for both the player and the Warriors as they reorganize their lineup.
Steve Kerr Reflects on Their Difficult Partnership
Speaking before a game against the Phoenix Suns, Kerr openly addressed the complexities of coaching Kuminga, describing their relationship as “rocky” yet acknowledging positive moments amid the challenges. He praised Kuminga’s personal qualities and contributions to the locker room atmosphere, emphasizing respect despite the fit not being ideal.

“Before I start, I want to thank Buddy and JK for their contributions,” Kerr said. “What they meant to our locker room, two well-liked guys.”
“JK is a really good guy,” Kerr remarked. “It’s been obviously a rocky road for him, for us, you know, it wasn’t always the right fit. Obviously, kind of been in and out of rotation, tough for him and tough for us too. And through all of that I enjoyed being around him.”
Kerr concluded his remarks by expressing his sincere hope for Kuminga’s career revival, wishing him success regardless of where his next opportunities arise.
“I really hope JK finds his way and whether it’s Atlanta or wherever else, I really want to see him succeed, and I’m sorry that didn’t happen here.”
Lessons and Hopes for Kuminga Moving Forward
Reflecting on Kuminga’s time with Golden State, Kerr emphasized the importance of opportunity in the NBA and encouraged Kuminga to apply the lessons gained from both triumphs and setbacks to his future endeavors. This guidance suggests Kerr’s desire for Kuminga to grow beyond their difficult experience and find renewed value as a professional athlete.
“Well, the thing in the NBA is opportunity is everything,” Kerr said. “I am hopeful that he can take what he has learn through his experiences, the ups and downs, the good and bad, and transfer that to his next opportunity.”
Kuminga is currently sidelined with a knee injury but is expected to make his debut with the Atlanta Hawks by the end of February. His ability to bounce back and secure a more consistent role will be critical as he seeks to fulfill the potential seen in his early career with the Warriors.
