Ja Morant’s Trade Value Hits ‘Negative’ Despite Star Status

The Memphis Grizzlies faced a surprising lack of trade offers for Ja Morant as the NBA trade deadline passed, with multiple league sources indicating little enthusiasm from other teams. ESPN analyst Brian Windhorst reported on Friday that Morant’s trade value is considered “negative” among NBA franchises, meaning teams expect draft picks as compensation to even consider acquiring the star point guard. This unusual situation reflects shifting perceptions around the 26-year-old player’s future in the league.

Understanding the ‘Negative Value’ Assigned to Morant

During an episode of ESPN’s Get Up, Windhorst explained the concept behind Morant’s trade discussions. Contrary to typical views of a player of his caliber, Morant is seen as a risky asset that teams would only accept if they received additional benefits, such as draft picks.

“When I say he has no value, I don’t even think that’s accurate,”

Windhorst said.

“I think he’s got, what they call in the league, negative value. What that means is teams were not willing to take Ja Morant unless they also attached draft compensation. In other words, you have to pay us to take him.”

Recent Struggles Hindering Morant’s Appeal

Ja Morant’s recent performance and injuries have contributed significantly to this diminished trade interest. Now in the third year of a five-year, $197 million contract, Morant has missed a substantial portion of the season, playing only 20 games while recovering from a series of injuries, including an elbow issue with no clear timeline for return. His statistical output has also declined, with averages of 19.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 8.1 assists per game—the rebounds and shooting percentages notably hitting career lows, including a 41.0% shooting rate and just 23.5% from three-point range.

Implications for the Memphis Grizzlies and Morant’s Future

These developments have caused increasing concern within the Memphis organization and the broader NBA community. Two-time All-Star Morant’s reputation appears to be waning among league executives and rival teams. Analyst Kendrick Perkins expressed similar apprehensions shortly after the deadline, highlighting the frustration surrounding Morant’s current standing. Morant remains under contract through the 2027-28 season before becoming a free agent, but his recent struggles raise questions about his long-term fit with the Grizzlies and potential trade scenarios going forward.
