The Boston Celtics are holding off on rushing Jayson Tatum back from the Achilles injury that sidelined him during last season’s playoffs. With the team positioned near the top of the Eastern Conference, Celtics executive and former head coach Brad Stevens emphasized that Boston’s performance will improve once Tatum is fully healthy and ready to rejoin the roster.
Stevens highlighted the significant impact Tatum would bring once he returns.
“Obviously, any team with Jayson Tatum’s going to be better,”
he said.
“If he needs it, I’ll tell him every day. Because every team — all 30 of us — would be way, way better with him on the team.”
Tatum’s Concerns About Disrupting Team Chemistry
Despite the clear recognition of his value, Tatum expressed some internal conflict regarding his timing to return. Speaking on The Pivot podcast, he acknowledged pondering how his presence might affect the Celtics’ established rhythm after playing more than 50 games without him during the regular season.
“That’s something I contemplate every day,”
Tatum revealed.
“They would have played 50-some odd games without me. So they have an identity this year, or things they’ve felt that have clicked for them, and it’s been successful. So there’s a thought in my head that is, like: ‘How does that work? How does that look with me integrating myself off an injury.’ And it is a thought, like, ‘Damn, do I come back, or should I wait?’”
Team Focuses on Full Recovery Before Return
Stevens responded to these concerns with reassurance, indicating that while the team wants Tatum back, they are in no rush to overly pressure him.
“He’s hit a lot of the thresholds, he’s doing more and more, and will continue to do more and more,”
Stevens noted.
“There’s no pressure from us. But there’s also not going to be any of us saying, ‘Well, why don’t you just take another week?’ It’s going to be: When he’s ready, he’s ready.”
This patient approach means the Celtics will only reintegrate Tatum once he reaches full health and confidence. Stevens stressed the importance of Tatum being completely cleared medically before making his comeback.
“It’s best for Jayson to come when he’s 110% healthy, he’s fully cleared by everybody that matters in that decision, and he’s got great peace of mind and ready to do it,”
Stevens said.
“That’s it. That’s the objective, and that’s what we’re going to stick with.”
Importance of Tatum’s Return for Celtics’ Prospects
The careful management of Jayson Tatum’s return is crucial as the Celtics aim to maintain and build upon their strong performance this season. Tatum’s presence significantly boosts Boston’s chances to contend deeply in the playoffs, yet the timing must balance his readiness with team cohesion established during his absence. For Boston, the goal remains clear: prioritize Tatum’s full recovery to maximize his impact in the stretch run and beyond.
