Washington Wizards general manager Will Dawkins announced Sunday that he anticipates Anthony Davis will resume playing this season, with a clearer timeline to be determined during the upcoming All-Star break. This update contrasts with a recent report from The Athletic, which suggested that Davis might be sidelined for the remainder of the campaign due to injury.
Davis, a 10-time NBA All-Star forward, has been sidelined since January 8 after spraining a finger on his non-shooting hand. The Wizards acquired him from the Dallas Mavericks shortly before the trade deadline as part of an eight-player deal. At the time, the expected recovery period was set at six weeks.
Current Status of Rehabilitation and Medical Evaluations
Dawkins explained the rehabilitation process, saying,
“The plan for AD right now is to go back to Dallas and finish his rehab.”
He added,
“During All-Star break, he takes another visit for a doctor. And that’s a big appointment for us to kind of see where his progress is at.”
These assessments will be critical in determining Davis’ readiness to return to the court.
Wizards’ Season Outlook Amid Roster Changes
Despite sitting 14-37 and near the bottom of the Eastern Conference, the Wizards are shaping a more competitive roster looking ahead. Along with Davis, Washington also acquired four-time All-Star Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks this January. Young has been dealing with a sprained knee and will also be reevaluated during the All-Star break.
Addressing Young’s condition, Dawkins noted,
“He’s still working on the court. He started doing 1-on-0, he started doing a little bit of more 2-on-2 type actions. … He’s trending in a positive direction.”
Meanwhile, the team continues to develop younger talents, including second-year forward Alex Sarr and rookie guard Tre Johnson, hoping to build a solid foundation for the future season.
What Anthony Davis’ Return Could Mean for the Wizards
Anthony Davis’ recovery and eventual return hold significant importance for the Wizards, who are endeavoring to improve their standing and competitiveness in the Eastern Conference. His presence alongside the young core and notable additions like Trae Young could drastically impact team dynamics and performance in the postseason push. The upcoming medical evaluation during the All-Star break will provide more clarity on his timeline and readiness, likely influencing Washington’s strategies for the remainder of the season and beyond.
