Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Backs Hometown Hamilton Arena

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the NBA’s reigning most valuable player and member of the Oklahoma City Thunder, has made a personal investment in his hometown of Hamilton by joining the ownership group of the TD Coliseum. This announcement was made by Oak View Group, the developer behind the arena, on Monday, although the financial details were not disclosed.

Commitment to Hamilton’s Cultural and Economic Growth

The 27-year-old athlete views this investment as a long-term dedication to fostering economic and cultural development in Hamilton. The TD Coliseum, originally opened in 1985 as Copps Coliseum and recently renovated at a cost of $300 million, was renamed in November following its extensive upgrade. The 18,000-seat venue is expected to become a hub for major live performances and events, reflecting Gilgeous-Alexander’s passion for music and entertainment.

Personal Connection and Naming Tribute

Gilgeous-Alexander shared that his roots in Hamilton are deeply meaningful to him.

“Becoming part of the ownership group at TD Coliseum is really personal for me,”

he said.

“Growing up in Hamilton shaped who I am, so having the opportunity to help build something special in my hometown means everything.”

As part of the partnership, the arena’s Ares Atrium will bear a name inspired by his son, symbolizing a personal connection to the project.

Welcoming Into the Ownership Group

Oak View Group’s CEO, Chris Granger, expressed enthusiasm about the new partnership, stating,

“We are excited to welcome Shai and his family to the TD Coliseum team.”

Gilgeous-Alexander’s relationship with Hamilton has been celebrated before, notably when he received the city’s key and had a street named in his honor last August after leading the Thunder to the NBA championship.

Significance for Hamilton’s Future

This investment by Gilgeous-Alexander marks a significant step toward strengthening Hamilton’s profile as a center for entertainment and community pride. The TD Coliseum’s renovation, combined with the involvement of a prominent hometown figure, is likely to attract prominent artists and boost local economic activity. Such initiatives are expected to have lasting impacts on the city’s cultural landscape and development trajectory.
