How Pistons Thrive Despite Losing Jalen Duren and Stewart

The Detroit Pistons will compete without their All-Star center Jalen Duren for the next two games and key defensive player Isaiah Stewart for seven games, following suspensions related to a mid-game altercation with the Charlotte Hornets on Monday. Despite this setback, the team is showing resilience through a demanding schedule extending before and after the All-Star break.

Adapting to Absences: A History of Strong Performance

Although losing critical frontcourt players is less than ideal, the Pistons have managed to maintain solid performance despite multiple injuries across their roster. Sitting at the top of the Eastern Conference with a 39-13 record, Detroit has absorbed the unavailability of Cade Cunningham, Tobias Harris, Caris LeVert, and others while still performing consistently.

Jalen Duren has missed eight games this season due to injuries, and the Pistons have won seven of those contests. Isaiah Stewart, who has missed four games, has seen Detroit prevail in three of them. Only twice this year have both Duren and Stewart been absent simultaneously, first during a win against the Chicago Bulls on November 12 and then in a loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on January 10.

Key Players to Step Up During Suspensions

With Duren sidelined for the next two games, Paul Reed is expected to shoulder considerable responsibility. Reed made a significant impact when both Duren and Stewart were ejected in Monday’s matchup, playing nearly the entire remainder of the game and contributing 12 points, three rebounds, two steals, and a block in just 18 minutes.

Although Reed has appeared in only 37 games this season and logged over 20 minutes in seven of them, he has consistently been ready to support the Pistons. Averaging 11.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists across his six starts, Reed is considered one of the most influential third-string big men in the league. He is expected to start the upcoming two games in Duren’s absence, with two-way center Tolu Smith likely providing backup minutes off the bench.

Even after Duren returns, Reed will retain a crucial role off the bench as Detroit prepares for matchups against top Western Conference teams including the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs.

Team Outlook Despite Player Losses

While the Pistons would undoubtedly prefer having their two top big men available, the team’s depth and demonstrated ability to perform without key players suggest they remain competitive. Given their consistent record through injuries and absences this season, Detroit should not be underestimated as they navigate this challenging stretch without Jalen Duren and Isaiah Stewart.

“There’s no doubt the Pistons would prefer to have their two top bigs available, but given how the team has played this season and the options behind them, Detroit shouldn’t be counted out by any means as they manage without them.” – Paul Reed, Veteran Forward
