The NBA imposed a one-game suspension on Los Angeles Lakers center Jaxson Hayes after he shoved the Washington Wizards mascot, G-Wiz, during pregame activities on January 30 at the Capital One Arena. Hayes served this suspension on February 3 in a game against the Brooklyn Nets, but the repercussions of the episode appear to be continuing.
The altercation occurred when Hayes struck G-Wiz as the mascot was walking back to the tunnel, sending him tumbling. The unexpected moment quickly spread across social media, drawing widespread attention.
Hayes later offered an apology and provided context for his actions.
“I obviously apologized to the team and to the mascot,”
Hayes said.
“I mean, we all try to get ourselves into a mental space and a physical space to get ready to go out and play a game. And when, somehow, I’m stretching, and somebody steps on my foot. I might have lost it and should have handled it a different way. We live, and we learn. And so, just going to keep doing that.”
The league deemed Hayes’ conduct unacceptable and suspended him for his unprovoked physicality toward the mascot, reinforcing their stance on player behavior.
Legal Representation Engaged on Behalf of Person in Mascot Costume
Despite Hayes’ apology, the individual inside the G-Wiz costume has hired legal counsel, signaling that the matter might escalate beyond the NBA’s disciplinary action. Waukeen McCoy, who previously represented Hayes’ ex-girlfriend Sofia Jamora during her domestic violence claim against Hayes, is now involved.
According to reports from TMZ Sports, McCoy confirmed that the person portraying G-Wiz suffered an injury from the incident and that they intend to negotiate with Hayes’ representatives before deciding on further legal steps.

“We will give them the opportunity to resolve the matter before taking legal action,”
McCoy stated.
“But legal action is anticipated. … All I want to say at the moment is that he was injured.”
Jamora had accused Hayes of physical abuse in 2021, a case that drew LAPD involvement and resulted in Hayes receiving three years of probation and mandatory domestic violence classes. The NBA reopened an investigation in 2024 following another lawsuit from Jamora, which was settled last year through McCoy’s negotiations.
McCoy also expressed criticism of the NBA’s disciplinary decisions.
“If it’s a woman, they drag their feet,”
he commented, highlighting perceived inconsistencies in the league’s handling of misconduct cases.
Coach JJ Redick Comments on the Suspension and Hayes’ Response
Following the viral reaction to Hayes’ suspension, Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick addressed the situation, acknowledging the league’s decision as justified and emphasizing hope that Hayes will learn from the incident.
“He made an error in judgment, and he owned up to it and apologized,”
Redick remarked.
“Hopefully, this is a learning opportunity for him.”
Hayes returned to the Lakers’ lineup on February 5 in a game against the Philadelphia 76ers. Over the current season, he has been averaging 6.7 points and 3.8 rebounds per game, with six starts averaging higher at 11.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.7 assists, demonstrating his ongoing contribution to the team despite the ongoing off-court issues.
Continued Implications of the Mascot Incident for Hayes and the Lakers
The incident involving Jaxson Hayes and the Washington Wizards mascot has raised significant tension for the Lakers center, as legal challenges may compound the league suspension. The involvement of Waukeen McCoy, who represents both the mascot’s suit wearer and previously represented Sofia Jamora during her domestic violence lawsuit against Hayes, adds complexity to the situation. These developments are placing increased scrutiny on Hayes and the Lakers organization amid a season already marked by trouble.
The legal action anticipated by McCoy could lead to serious consequences for Hayes beyond NBA discipline, potentially affecting his career and public image. Meanwhile, the Lakers will likely monitor the situation closely to manage player welfare and team reputation as the season progresses.
