Cade Cunningham Aims to Take Stephen Curry’s Olympic Torch by 2028

Detroit Pistons star Cade Cunningham is not only shaping his NBA career this season but also setting his sights on representing the United States on the Olympic stage. After a commanding victory over the Toronto Raptors this Wednesday, Cunningham expressed his ambition to follow in the footsteps of established stars like Stephen Curry by competing in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

With the 2024 Olympics in Paris highlighting veterans such as LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry leading Team USA, Cunningham acknowledges that the torch will eventually be passed to a new generation. He envisions himself as the next leader carrying that legacy forward in Los Angeles.

Building a Path to Leadership and Championship Success

Cunningham emphasized the importance of dedication and steady progress toward his goals, focusing on improving his skills and guiding the Pistons to more victories.

“I could take the torch by continuing to work, continue to be better each and every year, continue to take steps as far as leading this team to more and more wins,”

he said.

“Winning the championship is the ultimate goal. And then once that happens, staying poised and staying humble, coming back the next year and working every game. It’s a process.”

He also recognized the efforts required to reach such heights, noting,

“There’s a lot of different things that go into it. All those [top] guys did all that stuff and put the work in. So, that’s what I want to do.”

Long-Term Ambitions for the Pistons and Team USA

The Pistons currently hold the top spot in the Eastern Conference with a 40-13 record, positioning themselves as strong contenders for the postseason. This success aligns with Cunningham’s strategic plan, which includes making the NBA All-Star team, leading Detroit to a championship, and ultimately securing a place on the U.S. Olympic roster.

Reflecting on his goals, Cunningham stated,

“The L.A. All-Star Game was part of that plan. I wanted to make sure I’m in there. And then win a championship and be an Olympic point guard.”

As Cunningham continues to elevate both his individual performance and the Pistons’ standing, his goal to inherit the Stephen Curry Olympic torch symbolizes a broader ambition to define the future of American basketball on the international stage.
