The Chicago Bulls have integrated second-year guard Rob Dillingham into their lineup, and head coach Billy Donovan has taken note of his potential. Donovan recognizes Dillingham’s speed and ability to penetrate defenses but stresses the importance of improving the guard’s decision-making on the court.
Focus on Improving Shot Selection and Game Awareness
According to The Athletic’s Joel Lorenzi, Donovan addressed concerns about Dillingham’s shot choices and overall court judgment.
The decision-making, the shots that he’s taking, are not sustainable. And I told him that,
Donovan explained.
His job and responsibility is to generate shots for guys when he gets there … it’s not like I’m giving him free rein.
Donovan also emphasized the need for Dillingham to avoid risky plays such as jumping off two feet or attempting difficult passes, which could hinder his effectiveness.
We need him downhill, but he also can’t be jumping off of two feet, getting caught in the air, shooting over guys, trying to throw passes that aren’t there. He’s gotta clean that up, and we’ve gotta help him do it.
Maintaining Aggressiveness While Gaining Experience
While Donovan expects Dillingham to refine his decision-making skills, he also wants the guard to retain his natural aggressiveness that contributes to his offensive threat. The coach believes that through continued playing time and coaching, Dillingham will develop the ability to balance attacking defenses with smarter choices during games.
Bulls’ Strategy of Nurturing Young Talent
The team’s approach includes giving opportunities to promising players like Dillingham, who are adapting to new environments and gaining experience on the professional level. This strategy aims to cultivate talent and improve team dynamics over time.
