Anthony Edwards, guard for the Minnesota Timberwolves, earned the All-Star MVP award Sunday night after leading Team Stars to a 47-21 victory over the Stripes in the championship round at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles. The achievement carried a personal significance, as Edwards revealed that he had promised former President Barack Obama he would put on an exceptional performance before the game began.
Edwards acknowledged the motivation he found in Obama’s presence, saying,
“You always got to put on the show for him. He’s my favorite person in the world. We was kicking it yesterday. Me and him, I had a great time yesterday. So, I told him I was going to put on the show for him.”
Following this promise, Edwards delivered key plays, including a three-pointer that tied the opening round-robin game and eight points in the final, helping secure his first All-Star MVP trophy and setting the tone for the Stars’ early lead in the championship.
Edwards Stands Out Amid NBA’s New Midseason Format
The 2024 NBA All-Star weekend featured the league’s fourth midseason format change in as many years. This year’s event showcased American All-Stars competing against an international team during an Olympic year, amplifying the competitive spirit on the court. Edwards’ performance stood out in this energized atmosphere.
Reflecting on the team’s mindset, Edwards told CBS News,
“We chose to compete today, and we came out on top,”
and acknowledged teammate Victor Wembanyama’s impact:
“I ain’t going to lie, Wemby set the tone. He came out and played hard, and we had to follow that.”
While Wembanyama’s World team lost both contests, his 14 points in the opener and 19 in the third game, coupled with his embrace of the contest’s intensity, highlighted his effort.
Increased Competitiveness Elevates All-Star Game Experience
Victor Wembanyama praised the heightened level of play compared to previous years, stating,
“It was a pretty good display of basketball, better than last year, in my opinion. It was fun. I think being honest with ourselves is good. It’s a game we love, it’s a game I personally cherish, so being competitive is the least I can do.”
Commissioner Adam Silver also expressed gratitude toward players for their commitment to competition during the trophy presentation, recognizing the renewed intensity added to the event.
This All-Star weekend not only underscored Edwards’ basketball skills but also added to his growing public profile. His interaction with Obama extends beyond this event, as cameras previously captured their exchanges during the Netflix documentary “Court of Gold,” which focused on Team USA’s Olympic journey. This connection brought attention not just to Edwards’ talent but also to his personality and confidence, though Edwards emphasized gratitude over bravado this time.
On the court, other standout performances included Kawhi Leonard’s 31 points in the final round-robin game, although he scored only once in the championship. Tyrese Maxey contributed nine points for the Stars in the finale, but the spotlight remained firmly on Edwards, who made good on his promise to Obama by delivering a memorable All-Star weekend performance.
