The Los Angeles Clippers are facing a turning point this season, following a significant trade that sent guard James Harden to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for 26-year-old Darius Garland. The trade, which took place near the deadline this year, aims to reinvigorate a team currently fighting for a play-in spot in the Western Conference. This roster shakeup also includes a move towards a younger lineup, a shift underscored by assistant coach Brian Shaw’s confidence in the team’s potential going forward.
Brian Shaw Highlights Impact of New Guard Acquisition
Known for his successful NBA career, including three championships with the Los Angeles Lakers alongside Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant, Brian Shaw brings extensive experience to the Clippers’ coaching staff. Since joining the Clippers in 2021, he has witnessed several seasons where star pairings failed to advance beyond the first playoff round. Shaw is optimistic that Garland’s presence will change this trajectory.
Shaw reflected on Garland’s qualities, noting,
“Darius can guess who you know. I coached Darius with Nike Hoop Academy when he was in high school and just his quickness, his basketball IQ, he’s a great passer, and he can score. We have players on our team that will benefit from him, being able to set the table for him, for them, but as well as just upping the youth and the quickness that we have overall.”
Shaw went on to emphasize the transformation in the team’s age and agility, stating,
“We started out this season as the oldest team in the NBA history,
and added,
When you look at the fact that we started with Chris Paul and James Harden, so we had a pretty old team. We were pretty slow, so now we feel like we can compete with these younger, faster, more athletic teams that are out there.”
Darius Garland’s Potential Role and Current Status
Garland, a two-time NBA All-Star and former fifth overall pick, has established himself as one of the league’s promising young guards. This season, he has averaged 18.0 points and 6.9 assists per game. However, Garland has not yet made his debut with the Clippers due to recovery from a right toe sprain. Despite this setback, the team anticipates that Garland, alongside Kawhi Leonard, will form a dynamic backcourt combo to strengthen their playoff push.

Clippers’ Recent Performance and Outlook
Los Angeles currently sits 10th in the Western Conference and is focused on qualifying for the play-in tournament. Their recent results have been encouraging, with the Clippers posting a strong 20-6 record since December 20. The infusion of youth and speed brought by Garland’s acquisition is expected to boost the team’s competitiveness against faster, more athletic opponents throughout the remainder of the season.
This trade and roster adjustment represent a strategic effort for the Clippers to overcome past postseason hurdles and capitalize on their star talent, including Garland and Leonard, as they aim for deeper playoff success in the near future.
