Suns GM: All-Star Break Perfect for Jalen Green’s Recovery

Before missing the Phoenix Suns’ final game ahead of the All-Star break for injury management, Jalen Green logged his most minutes over a two-game stretch (totaling 37 minutes) since joining the team. Although he averaged 10 points and 3.5 assists in those games, his performance remains below what would be expected from him when fully healthy. Playing consecutive games marked a positive step after Green faced challenges staying on the court for back-to-back contests during his ongoing recovery.

General Manager on Green’s Recovery Status

Suns general manager Brian Gregory highlighted the timing of the All-Star break as an ideal pause for Green’s healing, combined with the experience Green gained during those games. According to Gregory, Green is

“in a good place heading into the last 27 games.”

Emphasizing the unpredictability of soft tissue injury recovery, Gregory said,

“The league has shown now that with soft tissue injuries, the progress is never in a straight line,”

expressing confidence in Green’s future by adding,

“He’s 23 years old, and he’s got a bright, bright future in front of us, and you want to make sure that things are in the right place for not only Game 1 but also Game 20 and then for his entire career.”

Details of Jalen Green’s Injury Challenges

Green has faced persistent injury setbacks, beginning with a hamstring injury first aggravated during preseason training camp. He re-injured the same hamstring in just his second game as a Sun, which sidelined him for approximately 2.5 months. Upon returning, Green again aggravated the hamstring during his second game back. A subsequent return was interrupted by a hip contusion caused by a hard fall. While both the hip and hamstring were concerns before his most recent appearances, only the hamstring was cited in his last missed game.

Green’s On-Court Synergy with Devin Booker

Green’s pairing with Devin Booker has shown promising signs despite limited court time. The Suns hold a net rating of +20 during the 59 minutes both have shared, ranking among the top three two-player combinations on the Phoenix roster with at least that many minutes. While acknowledging the small sample size, Gregory expressed optimism about the duo’s potential, stating,

“His explosiveness, his ability to get to the basket, his feel for the game, I think those two guys together are going to form one of the best backcourts, if not the best in the NBA, as we move forward, especially down the road as they get to play more and get a better feel for each other,”

and added,

“He brings a lot of stuff that, at times, we’re lacking. So, I think his fit is going to be really, really good.”

Green’s Attitude and Team Role

Beyond his physical recovery, Green has maintained strong engagement with the team even when sidelined, actively communicating with coaches in ways that are sometimes uncommon for players in similar positions. This mental approach has been a positive influence during his injury rehabilitation.

Looking Ahead for the Suns and Jalen Green

Phoenix is scheduled to return from the All-Star break with a game against the San Antonio Spurs, who currently hold the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference. The Suns stand at No. 7 in the conference, trailing the No. 6 seed by 1.5 games and holding a three-game cushion over the No. 8 seed, positioning themselves to potentially avoid the Play-In Tournament. The progress of Jalen Green’s recovery and his performance alongside Devin Booker will be critical as the team pushes through the remaining 27 games of the season, hoping to strengthen their standing and postseason prospects.
