On February 19, amidst the buzz of a Knicks game against the Detroit Pistons at Madison Square Garden, Astoria basketball coach Jerry Kokkinos was unexpectedly presented the Jr. Knicks Coach of the Year award by Knicks forward Mikal Bridges. The event took place in the Delta Sky 360 Club, where Kokkinos initially thought he was attending a gathering with other finalists, but found himself caught off guard when Bridges handed him the trophy. This special recognition highlights Kokkinos’s extensive dedication to youth basketball and his commitment to cultivating a thriving sports community in Queens.
A Surprise Celebration with Knicks Legends and a Substantial Prize
Kokkinos’s astonishment was visible as he nearly dropped his award, expressing disbelief with the words,
“I don’t know what’s happening right now,”
followed by,
“My wife won’t believe me when I tell her.”
Alongside the trophy, Kokkinos was awarded a $20,000 prize in recognition of his outstanding coaching efforts. Sharing the moment with Bridges were former Knicks player John Starks and lead team physician Dr. Daphne Scott, who also took part in honoring Kokkinos at the event.
About the Award and Its Community Impact
Presented by the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), this accolade is in its eighth year of acknowledging exemplary youth coaches throughout New York. The 2023 ceremony featured 15 coaches from across the state, including five from Queens, underscoring the borough’s rich sports culture. The award not only rewards coaching excellence but also promotes the importance of mentoring young athletes and developing community programs that nurture both personal growth and athletic skill.

Kokkinos’s Longstanding Commitment to Youth Basketball in Astoria
With 17 years of experience coaching at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) in Astoria, Kokkinos has made a lasting impact on the area’s basketball scene. Notably, he founded the region’s first girls CYO basketball program, ensuring that girls had a competitive league tailored specifically for them, moving beyond the previous practice of joining boys’ teams. Today, that program boasts 11 teams spanning various age groups, demonstrating significant growth and community support.
Empowering Girls Through Sports and Building Confidence
Jerry Kokkinos has consistently expressed pride in the progress of the girls’ basketball program. He noted,
“It’s very nice to see what we’ve grown in the community,”
emphasizing that providing girls with opportunities to participate in sports fosters development beyond the court. He further explained,
“They go into so many different fields because of the confidence they gain in playing sports.”
Many participants have advanced to high school and collegiate levels of basketball, while several return as coaches, contributing to the ongoing vitality of the program.
A Supportive Environment for Children from Diverse Backgrounds
The program’s inclusivity extends to welcoming children from a wide range of backgrounds, especially those facing challenges at school or in their personal lives. Kokkinos highlighted the importance of this supportive space by stating,
“They come from different homes, they come from different situations,”
and adding,
“They might be struggling in school, they might be having personal stuff, so this is just an outlet we provide for this community, and we will continue to do so as long as the school allows us and the community encourages us to.”
This approach illustrates the program’s role not only as a sports league but also as a crucial community resource aimed at resilience and growth.
Advancing to the Jr. NBA National Coach of the Year Program
Following his receipt of the Jr. Knicks Coach of the Year award, Jerry Kokkinos is set to represent the New York Knicks at the Jr. NBA’s National Coach of the Year Program. This next step recognizes his exceptional leadership and positions him among the elite youth coaches nationwide. His advancement will bring greater visibility to the Astoria basketball community and further inspire youth programming development across New York and beyond.
