Tyler Herro Returns Wearing Flak Jacket After Rib Recovery

After missing several weeks due to injury, Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro spoke to reporters following Thursday’s practice, confirming he suffered three fractured ribs last month, according to Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald. Herro described his challenging recovery process and recent physical improvements as he prepares to return to action.

Herro Describes Pain and Progress During Rehabilitation

Reflecting on his injury, Herro explained the severity of his condition and the limitations it imposed on everyday activities.

“There’s not too much discomfort anymore compared to where I was three or four weeks ago,”

he said.

“I couldn’t even get out of bed. It was crazy. There was nothing I could magically do to fix my ribs. I had three fractured ribs. My ribs were in a lot of pain. Doing normal lifestyle things, I couldn’t do. There was no way I could play basketball. I can fully move how I’m supposed to now. Just focused on staying healthy the rest of the season.”

Herro’s Return to Play and Precautionary Measures

After missing 15 games, Herro is expected to rejoin the Heat lineup Friday against the Atlanta Hawks following an upgrade to available status for the upcoming divisional matchup. The Heat will be close to full strength, with Terry Rozier and two-way players still inactive due to current absences from the team.

While Herro is eager to return, he plans to prioritize safety by wearing protective gear during games. According to Ira Winderman of The South Florida Sun Sentinel, Herro will don an NFL-style flak jacket underneath his jersey to safeguard his ribs against further impact.

Herro Shares Details on Protective Gear

Describing the customized equipment, Herro said,

“They had like a sewing person come in and sew a whole new pad in for me. So I got quite the flak jacket. I look like a football player almost out there. So I’m going to see how it goes, try to feel it out a little bit. Ultimately, just want to feel safe. Hopefully I just don’t get hit there and we’ll be good. But yeah, I’ll be protected.”

Implications for Team and Future Outlook

Herro’s return brings a key scoring option back to the Heat as they push through the season. His rib recovery and use of protective gear highlight the challenges athletes face when returning from painful injuries, balancing performance with caution. With Herro back in uniform, Miami looks to maintain momentum while managing player health amid a demanding schedule.
