Jaden Ivey did not see any playing time off the bench during the Chicago Bulls’ 110-101 loss to the Toronto Raptors on Thursday, as the coaching staff opted to exclude him from the rotation. Since being traded from the Detroit Pistons on February 3, Ivey had started in three of the last four games before the All-Star break, averaging 29 minutes per contest. However, the Bulls’ return of guards Josh Giddey and Tre Jones from hamstring injuries contributed to a reduction in his playing time, culminating in his complete benching, which surprised many observers.
Coach’s Explanation on Ivey’s Status and Health Challenges
Per Chicago Sports Network reporter K.C. Johnson, head coach Billy Donovan expressed support for interim coach Wes Unseld Jr.’s decision to keep Ivey off the court during the game. Donovan explained that the 24-year-old guard
“has not moved and played as he did in the past”
since undergoing surgery last January for a broken fibula in his left leg, as well as a procedure in October aimed at alleviating discomfort in his right knee. Ivey’s limited impact after returning to play in late November contributed to the Pistons’ decision to trade him before the deadline.
Looking Ahead: Evaluation and Future Role with the Bulls
As a restricted free agent this summer, Ivey’s future with the Bulls remains uncertain. The team may still provide additional opportunities to assess his fit and performance once roster circumstances require it, particularly if another guard becomes unavailable. Until then, the Bulls appear to be managing his recovery carefully while considering long-term roster construction decisions.
