Team president Matt Ryan emphasized the importance of surrounding the third-year quarterback with a strong coaching staff as the foundation for Penix’s growth in the coming seasons.
During an interview with Sirius/XM Radio, Ryan addressed the uncertainty surrounding the Falcons’ quarterback situation and assured that despite not making a definitive commitment initially, Penix remains an integral part of the team’s plans moving forward.
Coaching Staff and Fundamentals Key to Penix’s Progress
Ryan expressed confidence in the new offensive coordinator, Alex Van Pelt, citing his experience as a significant asset for Penix’s development. Focusing on fundamentals, Van Pelt plans to emphasize footwork and the basics of quarterback mechanics to help Penix refine his skills.
“How do you help him improve? No. 1, it starts with surrounding him with really solid coaches,”
Ryan stated.
“I’m excited about Alex Van Pelt coming in. He’s a good football coach. Coming in, you talk about the wealth of experience that he has for a young player like Michael. I think that’s really good. You go to the fundamentals; to me, it always comes down to the fundamentals. Do we start with our feet? I know in that interview process, Alex is going to hammer the footwork and going to hammer getting the basics right. So, it starts with the basics.”
Injury Status and Recovery Outlook for Penix
Last season, Penix appeared in nine games before suffering a torn ACL, marking his third knee reconstruction surgery. Despite this setback, he is ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation and has set his sights on returning to full strength by the start of the 2026 season.
Ryan praised Penix’s abilities and the team environment being built around him, noting:
“Michael does a great job. He can spin the football. We’re excited about what he does and we’re excited about the staff we’re putting around him.”
Team Changes and Quarterback Future
While Penix spends his recovery on injured reserve, veteran Kirk Cousins led the Falcons’ offense last season, but the team finished with an 8-9 record, missing the playoffs. Since then, Atlanta has undergone significant changes, including firing head coach Raheem Morris, reshaping the front office, and recruiting Ryan as team president.
