Haywood Highsmith Credits Miami Heat for NBA Career Boost

Phoenix Suns forward Haywood Highsmith recently acknowledged the Miami Heat for playing a crucial role in laying the groundwork for his NBA career, highlighting the team’s culture and professional standards as key influences. During a media session on Saturday, Highsmith detailed how his time with Miami helped him grow as a player and professional.

Highsmith explained,

“The Heat were the first team to really give me an opportunity. I learned a lot there defensively, work-wise, just how to approach every day as a pro and that’s really helped me in the long run. Obviously, I built some good character around the league and a lot of people respect me.”

Throughout multiple seasons with Miami, Highsmith developed into a versatile wing, capable of guarding various positions while spacing the floor effectively. Last year with the Heat, he averaged 6.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists across 74 games, including 42 starts. He maintained a 45.8% shooting percentage from the field and converted 38.2% from beyond the arc, playing almost 25 minutes per game.

How Miami’s Culture Influenced Highsmith’s Professional Growth

Highsmith credited Miami’s culture and daily routine for his evolution as a disciplined professional. Reflecting on his development, he said,

“The Heat were the first team to really give me an opportunity. I learned a lot there defensively, about the work, and how to approach every day as a pro. That’s helped me in the long run… I built good character around…”

Veteran Leadership and Future Contributions with the Phoenix Suns

After being waived by the Brooklyn Nets, Highsmith secured a two-year veteran minimum deal with the Phoenix Suns. Now 29 years old, he is currently recovering from a right knee meniscus repair performed in August, with plans for a reassessment within the next few weeks, according to Shane Young of the Suns’ official site.

Highsmith expressed confidence in the leadership and experience he brings to Phoenix’s locker room, aiming to support the team once he returns to full fitness. He shared,

“I think just overall, just bringing that winning aspect, that experience, and just knowing how it’s going to be each day – like I said, playoff moments, huddles, timeouts, and being there for the young guys here as well as I was in Brooklyn. I was a leader there so just trying to bring everything I can and be a good vet, a solid vet.”

The Suns, currently holding a 32-24 record, are navigating the challenges of the season’s second half and hope to halt a two-game losing streak when they face the Orlando Magic on Saturday afternoon. Highsmith’s prior playoff experience with Miami, combined with his steady defensive skills, is expected to add valuable depth to Phoenix’s roster once he returns to action.
