Brook Lopez Set to Lead Clippers as New Starting Center

Brook Lopez, who joined the Los Angeles Clippers as a seasoned backup behind starting center Ivica Zubac, is poised to take over as the team’s starting center for the rest of the season, according to Janis Carr of The Orange County Register. This shift comes after Zubac was traded to Indiana, placing greater responsibility on Lopez as the Clippers chase a playoff berth.

From Backup to Key Contributor Following Zubac’s Departure

Lopez first filled in during December when Zubac was sidelined with an ankle injury, temporarily stepping into the starting lineup. However, Lopez’s role fluctuated during this period as rookie Yanic Konan Niederhauser also provided backup minutes. The trade deadline, however, marked a turning point as Lopez’s presence on the floor increased significantly with Zubac no longer on the roster.

Veteran’s Preparedness and Adaptability Highlighted

The 37-year-old center has maintained a professional approach throughout, focusing on readiness regardless of his position in the rotation. Lopez expressed his commitment to helping the team in any capacity needed.

It’s just been about staying ready for me,

Lopez said.

Obviously, my goal is to help my team win by whatever means possible, so on a nightly basis, whatever’s required of me, I’m going to go out there and do it.

Experience and Recent Performance Reinforce New Role

Having spent the majority of his career as a starter before joining the Clippers last summer, Lopez brings considerable experience to his new role. His adaptability was on display during a recent game against the Lakers, where he recorded 16 points and 10 rebounds as the offensive focus shifted to him following Kawhi Leonard’s exit with ankle stiffness and Bennedict Mathurin fouling out.

I’m comfortable in a lot of different roles,

Lopez added.

It’s something I got to do for a good decade in my career, so I’m confident doing that. Again, whatever’s required of me.

Implications for Clippers’ Season Moving Forward

Lopez’s assumption of the starting center position stabilizes the Clippers’ frontline as they push deeper into the season, relying on his veteran presence and versatility. His ability to step up under pressure could prove vital as the team navigates challenges and strives to secure a favorable spot in the playoffs.
