Brook Lopez was born on April 1, 1988, in Panorama City, California, but his family lived in Granada Hills at the time. He is the son of Deborah Ledford and Heriberto Lopez, who was originally from Cuba. When Brook was in second grade, the family moved to Oak Harbor, Washington, to be closer to his older brother, Alex, who played basketball at the University of Washington. A year later, they relocated to Fresno, California, where Brook spent the rest of his childhood. He attended San Joaquin Memorial High School, where he played basketball alongside his twin brother, Robin Lopez, and Quincy Pondexter, both of whom would also become NBA players. As a senior, Brook stood 7 feet tall and weighed 235 pounds, averaging 13.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game. He and Robin committed to Stanford University in early 2005.
