The Portland Trail Blazers are vying to return to the playoffs for the first time since the 2020-21 season as they prepare to face the Denver Nuggets at home on Friday night. The team’s improving performance, led by All-Star forward Deni Avdija, has propelled them into contention for the Western Conference play-in tournament and potentially beyond.
Despite a 27-29 record that may not seem impressive, Portland has rarely surpassed this win total in recent years. Their strong finish to the pre-All-Star break period, winning four of their last five games, coupled with Avdija declaring his back injury resolved, has boosted the team’s confidence heading into this critical stretch.
Deni Avdija’s Impact and Team Momentum
Avdija has been instrumental in the Blazers’ current surge, ranking first on the team in points per game (25.2) and assists (6.6), while standing second in rebounds (7.2). After missing 10 of the last 16 games, his return is a significant factor in Portland maintaining their position near the playoff cutoffs.
“We’re healthy, we’re ready to go,”
Avdija said.
“Our spirits are up. We’re in a good spot in the standings and our confidence is really good right now. So we’re working out, the team chemistry is there, everybody’s happy for each other and we just want to finish those 26 games strong.”
Portland currently sits 10th in the Western Conference, just behind the Los Angeles Clippers who overtook them with a narrow 115-114 win against the Nuggets on Thursday. The Blazers hold a 5 1/2-game lead over the Memphis Grizzlies, who are 11th in the conference. While only the top six secure direct playoff entry, teams finishing 7th through 10th qualify for the play-in tournament.

Coach Tiago Splitter Stresses Need for Continued Improvement
Despite the encouraging position, interim coach Tiago Splitter emphasized that the work is far from over. The team must sharpen both ends of the floor, improve rebounding, limit turnovers, and reintegrate players returning from injury or restricted minutes.
“We’ve got work to do,”
Splitter said.
“We’ve got to get better defensively, offensively, control better the rebounds, take care of the ball, turnovers. And then get the group back, a lot of guys that were on minutes restrictions, guys coming back from injury. Then we’ve got to put all of that together.”
Meanwhile, shooting guard Shaedon Sharpe continues to sit out due to a left calf strain, marking his fifth consecutive missed game.
Denver Nuggets’ Playoff Position and Recent Struggles
The Nuggets dropped to fourth place in the West after their loss to the Clippers, though they remain on track for their eighth straight postseason appearance following their 2022-23 championship. Jamal Murray’s missed free throw in the final second prevented Denver from forcing overtime in that contest.
“Jamal gave us a chance at the end on the free-throw line,”
Denver coach David Adelman said.
“He’s the guy that we trust the most on our team to make those shots.”
Murray contributed 20 points but struggled from the field, shooting 5-for-15, while Nikola Jokic posted a double-double with 22 points and 17 rebounds alongside six assists, despite shooting just 9-for-22.
“We’re not making big shots,” Jokic remarked after experiencing five losses in seven games. “Hopefully that will change.”
Bench players Bruce Brown, Cameron Johnson, and Julian Strawther helped the Nuggets stay competitive, with Brown scoring 19 points and both Johnson and Strawther adding 18. Notably, Strawther matched his career best by sinking six three-pointers during the game.
Key Moments and Previous Meeting Between Teams
Denver’s defensive lapses were costly, as they allowed 70 points in the second half against Los Angeles. A particularly damaging mistake was a late-game confusion on an inbounds play where Johnson and Jokic switched assignments, enabling Clippers’ Brook Lopez to score a crucial dunk that gave Los Angeles a four-point lead with just 13 seconds left.
Earlier in the season, the Trail Blazers secured a narrow 109-107 victory over the Nuggets at home on October 31. Jerami Grant clinched the game with two free throws in the final seconds, while Avdija led Portland with 23 points. For Denver, Murray scored 22 points and Jokic contributed 21 points along with 14 rebounds and nine assists.
Implications for Playoff Prospects and Next Steps
The upcoming matchup between Portland and Denver is critical for both teams’ postseason ambitions. The Trail Blazers are fighting to maintain their hold on a play-in spot, relying heavily on the resurgence of Deni Avdija and the gradual return of key players from injury to elevate their overall performance. Meanwhile, the Nuggets must correct offensive inefficiencies and defensive lapses to avoid slipping further behind in the competitive Western Conference standings.
How these teams perform over the remaining 26 games will shape their playoff seeding and potentially determine their postseason longevity. Portland’s resilience and recent momentum, combined with Avdija’s leadership, offer hope for their first sustained postseason run in multiple years.
