NEW ORLEANS — In a remarkable return to form, center DeAndre Jordan delivered a standout performance on Saturday night, helping the New Orleans Pelicans secure a 126-111 win over the Philadelphia 76ers. Jordan’s vintage performance, which included 15 rebounds and four blocks, was pivotal in halting the Sixers’ offense and energizing his team.
After the game, Jordan expressed his satisfaction, looking forward to unwinding with a glass of wine at home.
“I’ll probably have some Bordeaux tonight,”
he said.
Limited Playing Time Makes Impactful Return Even More Impressive
The 37-year-old Jordan’s appearance was unexpected to many, as he had spent almost the entire 18th NBA season mostly on the bench. Originally brought in primarily as a mentor for the Pelicans’ younger big men, including first-round draft pick Derik Queen, Jordan had only appeared in two games this year and had not played since October 29.
However, following a disappointing defensive showing in a heavy loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday, Pelicans head coach James Borrego decided to make a change by giving Jordan his 793rd career start.
“My gut was saying to make this move,”
Borrego explained, reflecting on his decision amid a challenging 16-42 season since replacing Willie Green after 12 games.
Coach Borrego’s Confidence in Jordan Results in Extended Minutes
Before the game, Borrego had a quick conversation with Jordan, who was prepared and eager to contribute.

“When he got to the arena, I had a quick conversation with him. He was ready to go and we made the move,”
Borrego said.
Jordan rewarded that trust with a commanding presence on the court, playing close to 32 minutes and impacting the game through his defense and interior toughness.
“His impact defensively for us tonight was massive,”
Borrego noted.
“To be a good defensive ball club in this league, you’ve got to have some type of physicality, rim protection, deterrence, a presence in the middle—and he provided that.”
He added,
“He was phenomenal defensively in so many ways. Even shots he didn’t block, they weren’t sure that they wanted to get in there.”
DeAndre Jordan’s Defensive Highlights and Offensive Contributions
Jordan’s defensive plays included several impressive blocks, such as swatting away Kelly Oubre Jr.’s driving floater and leaping to deflect VJ Edgecombe’s 3-point attempt. Offensively, he chipped in six points, including a memorable alley-oop dunk set up by teammate Herb Jones.
Reflecting on his time on the court, Jordan said,
“Any time you can go out a compete in this league, it’s a gift, man. It was cool to be able to go out there and play tonight.”
Mentorship Role Remains Key Despite Limited Minutes
Jordan, a 2017 All-Star with the Los Angeles Clippers, has maintained readiness by regularly participating in five-on-five scrimmages with fellow bench players. He knew from the outset that his role was primarily to help develop younger Pelicans big men like Queen, Yves Missi, Karlo Matkovic, and Zion Williamson.
“That’s a part of the job,”
Jordan said.
“They’ve got bigs that are part of their future. So, coming in, I knew it was going to be: Play some nights, maybe not play some nights, be a mentor. But when my number is called, I’ve got to be ready.”
Leadership Extends Beyond the Stat Sheet During On-Court Incident
Jordan’s leadership emerged during a tense moment when he stepped between Derik Queen and Sixers center Andre Drummond after an exchange under the basket turned physical. His presence helped defuse the confrontation and illustrated his importance beyond just playing time.
When asked if he envisioned a larger role for the remainder of the season, Jordan smiled and said, “I’ve got fresh legs.”
Embracing the Moment and Looking Ahead
Jordan emphasized the team aspect of the game, stating,
“It’s not about me or one guy. But tonight I got the opportunity to play and I took advantage of it.”
Coach Borrego believes Jordan’s performance was well-deserved, acknowledging the veteran’s influence within the team.
“He deserves all that comes with tonight,”
Borrego said.
“He’s elevated our program in so many ways that will never be discussed anywhere but in our locker room.”
Significance of Jordan’s Contribution for the Pelicans’ Season
DeAndre Jordan’s vintage performance not only helped secure a convincing win against a strong opponent, but it also demonstrated the value of experienced leadership amid a rebuilding season for the Pelicans. His ability to deliver impactful minutes while mentoring young players could play a critical role as New Orleans continues to develop its roster down the stretch.
With 24 games remaining, Jordan’s readiness and commitment may offer the Pelicans a stabilizing presence on both ends of the floor, and potentially more opportunities to add value in the team’s future efforts.
