Raptors’ Collin Murray-Boyles Seizes Bigger Role Downstretch

MILWAUKEE—In a season marked by roster changes and hard lessons, the Toronto Raptors have entrusted significant responsibilities to promising young players, including second-year swingman Collin Murray-Boyles and rookie Ja’Kobe Walter. These players have emerged as vital contributors as the team aims to end a three-year playoff drought by strengthening their lineup down the season’s final stretch.

Ja’Kobe Walter, now playing ahead of Gradey Dick following the trade of Ochai Agbaji, has developed into a reliable shooter and a disruptive force on defense over the last nine games. His ability to consistently pressure opposing guards has stood out, with Raptors veteran Brandon Ingram noting Walter’s defensive tenacity.

Defensive Prowess and Growing Confidence for Ja’Kobe Walter

“We actually went at it in practice the other day where he was actually getting into my s—-, playing (ultra-aggressive) defence,”

Ingram said, highlighting Walter’s relentless approach on the court. Walter himself emphasized the importance of embracing pressure and responsibility to earn his teammates’ trust.

“I hold myself to a high standard, too,”

Walter said.

“When I’m watching film, I’m never looking for any other mistakes but mine. Figuring out what I could always do better to help the game, help us win.”

He further added,

“Embracing the pressure is something that I love and I feel like responsibility is a big part of it, just addressing when you’re wrong so your teammates (will) listen to you and understand that you’re trying to do things to win and not just to just play.”

The impact Walter has on the team goes beyond statistics. In a recent win over the Chicago Bulls, he managed 14 points, three steals, and several deflections while setting a disruptive defensive tone alongside teammate Jamal Shead. Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic expressed confidence in Walter’s readiness for this important role.

“There is a growing confidence inside this group that he’s ready for this challenge,”

Rajakovic said after the game.

Ingram praised Walter’s character and developmental progress, saying,

“Whenever he comes on the floor, he wants to do the best he can. He’s willing to learn. He gets better every single game. Overall, I think he’s going to be a good pro, I think.”

Collin Murray-Boyles Establishes Himself as a Key Defensive and Offensive Option

Murray-Boyles, a rookie who has quickly gained trust in critical moments, has solidified his role as a defensive anchor and a strong finisher near the basket. He has moved ahead of Jonathan Mogbo on the depth chart and earned the confidence of coaches and veterans despite his inexperience. His late-game production was evident in the victory over Chicago, capping the win with a decisive three-point play in the final 35 seconds.

Ingram commented on Murray-Boyles’ growth, saying,

“There were three minutes left in the game and he had shot a layup and missed it. I told him when he goes up at this point of the game, he has to be sure about getting those buckets, because they’re needed.”

He added,

“I continued to trust him at the end of the game. I saw he had a small (defender) on him, he caught the ball, he finished the basket, he made a free throw. It’s growth from those guys.”

Despite the pressure on a young team desperate to return to the playoffs, Murray-Boyles remains composed and energized.

“That’s why I was drafted, drafted to make an impact,”

Murray-Boyles said.

“Don’t take it lightly. Just trying to help the team win as much as possible, regardless if that’s me playing or not, just me being an energy guy, making my teammates better.”

Team Dynamics and the Role of Young Players in Raptors’ Playoff Push

Along with established players like point guard Jamal Shead and floor-spacing big man Sandro Mamukelashvili, Walter and Murray-Boyles are crucial contributors off the bench. Their youth and energy inject life into the Raptors’ rotation as the team battles to secure a postseason spot. Walter credits his teammates for instilling in him the confidence necessary to thrive.

“They’ve just been really trying to instill confidence in me. It really reminded me at all times what I’m capable of doing and how I can help, what I can bring to the team, how I can help us win,”

Walter said.

“It’s a change of mentality, realizing that my special gift is energy, I’m able to affect the game defensively.”

The aggressive defensive style and willingness to take on high-pressure roles from Walter and Murray-Boyles offer hope that Toronto’s young core can build momentum and drive the team out of its recent playoff absence. Coach Rajakovic’s trust, combined with veteran support from players like Brandon Ingram, creates an encouraging environment for growth and resilience as the Raptors navigate the season’s final challenges.
