New Orleans Pelicans rookie Derik Queen is navigating the demanding grind of his first NBA season with a mix of physical endurance and growing enthusiasm. Despite the exhaustion often associated with rookies, Queen remains energized by the rare opportunity to compete, even if it sometimes leads to restless nights.
Under coach James Borrego, Queen has played a significant role in the rotation during a season marked by injuries. Logging over 1,000 minutes before the All-Star break, he is demonstrating stamina that belies the months of rehab he endured in the offseason.
Motivation Comes Amid Physical and Mental Fatigue
Queen acknowledges the challenges but finds excitement in his journey.
“I feel good. I was just thinking about it. I forgot all about the three months I was out,”
he said.
“I actually woke up in the middle of the night thinking about it. I’m just excited for the opportunity to showcase (down the stretch),”
he added, expressing how the chance to prove himself fuels his focus despite the difficulties.
A Moment of Basketball Intelligence Shines Through
Rather than highlight scoring feats or spectacular dunks, Queen treasures a moment that embodies his grasp of smart basketball. Reflecting on a game against Portland, he recounted,
“When we played Portland, at halftime we were talking about the kicks and how we ain’t got to take an extra dribble,”
he explained.
“The kicks are open, and they were pressuring us on the side. I got the ball, took one dribble, then swung it to (Saddiq Bey), and he made the three. That was a nice pass.”
This insightful play, born from a halftime adjustment, illustrates Queen’s understanding of the game’s nuances—something highly valued by the Pelicans’ management, including Joe Dumars and Troy Weaver, who recognize his focus on team play and smart decisions.
Building Confidence Through Experience and Resilience
Queen’s journey through the early stages of his rookie season combines a physical test with a mental awakening. The Maryland alumnus continues to accumulate minutes and lessons on the court, showing signs of quiet confidence despite the pressures of a challenging season. His restless nights reflect not fatigue alone, but a restless eagerness to grow and seize every opportunity as his professional career unfolds.
