Chris Paul Picks Shai Over Luka as Ideal NBA Point Guard

The traditional role of a point guard in the NBA has evolved, with true floor generals becoming less common. Players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Luka Doncic of the Los Angeles Lakers represent the typical “combo guard” often seen leading teams today. Recently retired Chris Paul revealed his choice between these two rising stars as the ideal point guard in the league.

Why Chris Paul Chooses Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Over Luka Doncic

On an episode of Carmelo Anthony’s podcast, ‘7PM in Brooklyn,’ Paul expressed his preference for Gilgeous-Alexander when asked who he would want to run point guard. Paul emphasized Shai’s strong work ethic and commitment to defense as critical factors in his decision.

“We would be on the road, watching games, but he [Shai] would love to be in the gym. Love to be in the gym, he’s gonna do all work and taking care of his body,”

Paul said.

He continued, highlighting the importance of defensive effort:

“And I think that year that we played together, he also started to see that defense matters.”

Paul elaborated,

“You ain’t gotta be a lockdown defender or whatnot, but when you’re playing defense for your team, your teammates just want to see that the starts actually try on defense.”

The Role of Defense in Paul’s Evaluation of Point Guards

Paul also reflected on the defensive evolution of other stars such as Stephen Curry, stating,

“When I was in Houston, Steph [Curry] wasn’t the greatest defender then.”

He added,

“But now, Steph, he D’s up. He plays really good defense. I got a lot of respect for Steph, Shai and all these guys who at least try on the defensive end because that’s part of it and that’s what your teammates want to see.”

Ultimately, Paul’s preference comes down to defense being a determining factor between Gilgeous-Alexander and Doncic, valuing effort and commitment on that side of the ball.

What This Means for the NBA’s Future Point Guard Landscape

Chris Paul’s insight into the modern point guard role spotlights the value of defensive accountability alongside offensive skills in today’s NBA stars. His choice suggests that players willing to invest in their defensive game and maintain high work ethics, like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, may set the standard for the position moving forward. As Paul transitions from his playing career, his perspective offers a thoughtful look at the evolving demands and qualities essential for point guards.
