The Chicago Bulls continue to face difficulties as they enter their ninth consecutive loss, grappling with heavy roster turnover and frequent turnovers on the court. On Tuesday, the Bulls will host the Charlotte Hornets in an effort to halt their longest losing streak since the 2018-19 season, refusing to use their team’s ongoing adjustments as an excuse for their struggles, despite the mounting challenges.
Chicago’s Offensive Troubles and Injury Concerns
In Sunday’s narrow 105-99 loss to the New York Knicks, the Bulls showed some fight, but offensive issues persisted with 17 turnovers marking their seventhgame in a row with at least 13 giveaways. The team’s performance was further hindered by the absence of Anfernee Simons due to a left wrist injury, while Tre Jones and Josh Giddey played limited minutes after recently recovering from hamstring issues. Chicago also suffered a setback when center Jalen Smith exited the game in the third quarter with right calf tightness, reducing their frontcourt depth beyond acquisitions Guerschon Yabusele and Nick Richards.
Coach and Players Address Turnover Issues
Bulls coach Billy Donovan pinpointed some turnovers to players making aggressive moves but failing to finish, saying,
“I do think some of our turnovers have been guys leaving their feet trying to attack the basket, getting there and realizing they can’t get a shot off and trying to spray it and the ball gets deflected or stolen,”
which reflects the team’s struggle to maintain possession under pressure. Guard Josh Giddey acknowledged the frustrations of constant lineup changes, stating,

“Our job is to go out and perform and win games,”
and added,
“Obviously, we’re not going to keep using the excuse, ‘It’s a new team.’ We’re past that part now. It is frustrating because you build so much continuity with the team you have and then it gets torn apart within a couple of days. So, we have 30 games to get this new team together and … get familiar with how we play.”
Hornets Strive for Consistency Amid Play-In Race
Meanwhile, the Charlotte Hornets, battling with Atlanta and Milwaukee for the East’s final play-in tournamentspots, have struggled with ball security themselves, ranking 28th in the NBA with 15.8 turnovers per game. Yet, they improved their ball control in a recent 129-112 victory over Washington, limiting giveaways to 12 and snapping a two-game losing streak. LaMelo Ball spearheaded the win with a career-best 10 three-pointers and 37 points, which he credited to
“Just not forcing, finding the best looks. Finding the right places and everything, and just going from there.”
Key Contributors Fueling Charlotte’s Offense
Supporting Ball’s scoring were Kon Knueppel and Brandon Miller, who each drained five three-pointers and contributed 28 and 22 points respectively. Knueppel has consistently hit multiple triples in every February game, shooting an impressive 47.4% from beyond the arc this month. The Hornets are also preparing for the return of starters Miles Bridges and Moussa Diabate, who served four-game suspensions following a brawl against the Detroit Pistons on February 9.
Hornets Coach Anticipates a Boost from Returning Players
Charlotte coach Charles Lee expressed optimism about the duo’s return, commenting,
“It’ll be very nice to get two very good players back into the lineup,”
and praised the efforts of the roster during their absence, adding,
“But I’m also really proud of the guys that stepped up in their absence and gave us some really big minutes.”
Coby White Expected to Make Impact in Hornets Debut
Guard Coby White, who was traded from Chicago to Charlotte on February 4 and has been sidelined with a left calf strain, is listed as probable to make his first appearance for the Hornets against his former team. White, selected seventh overall in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Bulls, appeared in 451 games for Chicago, fueling anticipation and hype around his Hornets debut.
Implications of the Upcoming Matchup
A Hornets victory would even the season series between the two teams at two wins apiece, following Charlotte’s dominant 112-99 win in January, which was the only game decided by double digits so far this season. Bulls guard Josh Giddey has found success against Charlotte with three straight double-doubles, highlighting the personal matchups at stake. This contest carries significance for both teams as Chicago seeks to break out of its slump while Charlotte fights to secure a postseason berth.
