Kawhi Leonard Free Agency Frenzy: Lakers, Warriors & Knicks Ready

Kawhi Leonard, the Los Angeles Clippers forward, is currently delivering one of the best seasons of his career, averaging a career-high 28.0 points per game in his 14th NBA campaign. Despite his dominant performance, an ongoing NBA investigation could jeopardize his future with the Clippers. The probe centers on allegations involving Leonard and Clippers owner Steve Ballmer using a defunct fintech company, Aspiration, to bypass salary cap restrictions, which, if confirmed, could lead to Leonard’s $149.5 million, three-year contract being voided.

This looming uncertainty has intensified speculation around Leonard’s next destination, with top NBA franchises like the Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, and New York Knicks reportedly preparing to pursue the star forward should he become a free agent.

Leonard’s Impact on the Clippers and the Investigation’s Progress

After a rough start to the 2025-26 season, Leonard has been instrumental in revitalizing the Clippers’ campaign. Through several clutch performances, he pushed the team up to 10th place, improving their chances of a play-in tournament spot. Leonard’s resurgence has somewhat overshadowed the controversy surrounding the Aspiration scandal, but the investigation remains active.

NBA commentator Tom Haberstroh recently highlighted the possibility that Leonard could face the harshest consequences in this case. Should the league decide to void his contract, Leonard would immediately become a free agent, triggering significant movement in the NBA market.

“So maybe it’s a case where Adam Silver levies some sort of punishment, whether it’s forcing Kawhi Leonard’s contract to be invalidated, … but the interesting thing about that is it creates a conundrum where, if Kawhi Leonard is now a free agent, you’re going to see a frenzy for his services with the likes of the Lakers, the Golden State Warriors, or the New York Knicks,”

Haberstroh explained.

He added,

“They would try to go get Kawhi Leonard at this stage as a free agent. That, I think, would create more hysteria and chaos around the league than actually forcing the Clippers’ hands.”

Furthermore, Haberstroh expressed doubt about the league forcing a sale of the Clippers franchise as part of the punishment for Steve Ballmer, stating,

“I would be very surprised if [the NBA] forced the sale of [the Clippers].”

Leonard’s Current Performance and What’s Next

For now, Leonard continues to play at an elite level, echoing the form he showed during his two NBA championship seasons. Alongside his impressive scoring average, he contributes 6.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.0 steals per game while shooting nearly 50 percent from the field and over 38 percent from beyond the arc.

The unfolding investigation and potential penalties place Leonard at the center of what could be a significant shift in the NBA landscape. His status as a top-tier free agent would attract intense competition from the Lakers, Warriors, and Knicks, all eager to add a proven champion and defensive powerhouse to their rosters.

As the NBA nears its findings, the basketball world watches closely to see whether Leonard will remain with the Clippers or spark one of the most dramatic free agency sagas in recent history.
