Doc Rivers: Scottie Barnes Deserves Most Improved Player Award

The Toronto Raptors ended the Milwaukee Bucks‘ three-game winning streak with a decisive 122-94 victory on Sunday, securing their 2025-26 NBA regular-season series against the Bucks with a 3-1 record. The Raptors achieved this milestone without Scottie Barnes, who was unavailable due to personal reasons.

Key contributors to the win included Immanuel Quickley, who exploded for 32 points on 11-of-19 shooting, and Brandon Ingram, who added 22 points. From the bench, Sandro Mamukelashvili and Jamal Shead provided significant support with 15 and 12 points respectively, helping the Raptors maintain offensive balance despite Barnes’ absence.

Doc Rivers Highlights Barnes’ Remarkable Progress and Leadership

Before the game, Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers offered high praise for Scottie Barnes, expressing surprise at the forward’s development over the last two years. Reflecting on Barnes’ growth, Rivers remarked on his earlier uncertainty about Barnes’ potential and how that doubt has since disappeared.

“I don’t know if he’s up for the Most Improved Player (Award), but he should be,” said Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers ahead of Sunday’s game. “About a year or two ago — and I’m being really honest; I probably shouldn’t even say this — but I wasn’t sure watching Scottie. I was like, ‘Man, I don’t know what he is, what he’s gonna do. How he’s gonna improve?’

“And then watching them this year, it’s like, ‘Wow, whatever that question was, it’s all gone.’ And it’s more than just his play with Scottie; it’s his leadership. Being a young player, being kind of thrown in that role, that’s not easy. …He gives him that intensity, and he also can guard one through five, which doesn’t hurt at all. And his offence, he’s found his spots on the floor where he can be effective with his passing. I don’t know if I’ve seen a player improve that quickly.”

Rivers’ commendation underscores Barnes’ versatility, defensive capabilities across multiple positions, and his increasing effectiveness in offensive roles, as well as his emerging leadership qualities within the Raptors’ roster.

Barnes’ Consistent Impact in the 2025-26 Season

Scottie Barnes has earned his second NBA All-Star selection during the current season, establishing himself as a key figure in Toronto’s lineup. Over 55 games, Barnes has posted averages of 19.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game while shooting an efficient 50.1 percent from the field. This statistical productivity highlights his significant contribution on both ends of the court, supporting the Raptors’ competitive standing.

Moving forward, his ability to maintain and build on this momentum will be a key storyline to follow for NBA observers and Raptors fans alike.
