Following a trade deadline deal that sent Anfernee Simons out and brought in Nikola Vucevic, the Celtics lost a pivotal bench ballhandler and scorer. This prompted Mazzulla to reposition Payton Pritchard, the team’s starting point guard for much of the season, back into a bench role. Despite starting the first 48 games after earning last year’s Sixth Man of the Year Award, Pritchard accepted this shift in role for the benefit of the team, resulting in positive outcomes for all involved.

These figures represent a significant jump from his earlier averages of 16.8 points, 5.3 assists, 46% shooting, and 35% three-point shooting while starting and playing 32.8 minutes per game.
Although the sample size remains limited, the statistics signal a clear upgrade in Pritchard’s play, elevating him from a role player to a key contributor during this stretch. Boston has thrived with these changes, holding a 6-1 record since the adjustment and showcasing some of the season’s best two-way basketball.
