NBA Hall of Famer and Miami Heat legend Chris Bosh described a frightening health scare, saying he feels lucky to be alive following the incident. The event unfolded recently when Bosh woke up covered in his own blood while preparing for a date with his wife.
Bosh recounted,
“Next thing you know, I was on the ground,”
revealing a sudden collapse without clear memory of what led to it. He chose not to disclose the precise medical cause but provided further insight in his Substack newsletter, The Last Chip.
Sudden Collapse and Confusion Detailed by Bosh
Writing about the episode in his Substack, Bosh explained,
“I was walking from my closet into the bathroom, getting ready for an evening out, when my body turned on me.”
He described experiencing a numbness and an electric shock down his left leg before falling to the floor.
He added,
“A numbing sensation shot down my left leg, that sharp, electric feeling you get when you bump your funny bone. Before I knew it, I was on the floor. I slowly came to in a pool of my own blood while my wife frantically spoke with 911. I tried to move my body the way I always had, and it didn’t respond.”
Reflecting on How the Incident Changed His Perspective
Chris Bosh described how this alarming health crisis reshaped his outlook on life. He wrote,
“After coming back from the darkness, there was no euphoric clarity… What did change was an immediate outlook on life that was simpler and more honest.”
Background on Bosh’s Health Challenges and Retirement
Bosh’s recent health scare adds to a history of serious medical issues that led to the early end of his NBA career. He retired in 2019 after suffering from recurring blood clots, which first appeared during the 2014-15 season when a clot formed in his leg and traveled to his lung, cutting his season short after 44 games.
Although he returned for the 2015-16 season, another clot was discovered, forcing him to miss the remainder of that season after 53 games. Despite his desire to continue playing, Miami Heat team doctors declared it too risky for him to pass physical evaluations ahead of the 2016-17 season.

Bosh, who won two NBA championships with the Heat and was selected for 11 All-Star games, retired at age 31. In recognition of his career, the Heat retired his jersey in 2019, and he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021.
Bosh’s Commitment to Sharing His Story Going Forward
Following this latest incident, Bosh plans to use his experience as a platform for connection and education. He wrote,
“This experience motivated me to start writing again, to share my experiences and stories in the hope that we can get something out of it and grow together.”
Chris Bosh’s openness about his health struggles highlights the unpredictable nature of such conditions and underscores the importance of awareness and support for those facing similar challenges.
