Luca Wright, the Minnesota Timberwolves fan who gave star Anthony Edwards an orange wristband, has been declared cancer free after fighting leukemia. His mother, Lacey Wright, shared the news on social media Thursday, marking a hopeful milestone in Luca’s journey.
The wristband, labeled “Love Like Luca,” was gifted to Edwards during a meeting with Timberwolves players ahead of a January 2025 road game against the Detroit Pistons. Luca was holding a sign listing his goals:
“1. Beat Cancer 2. Be The Next MJ.”
Anthony Edwards’ Commitment to Luca’s Cause
Edwards promised Luca that he would wear the orange wristband throughout his career and has consistently worn it since their initial meeting. The two reunited during the 2025 All-Star Weekend in the Bay Area, further strengthening their bond.
At one point, the bracelet snapped during Game 4 of the Timberwolves’ first-round playoff matchup with the Los Angeles Lakers in April, but Edwards has been seen wearing what appears to be a replacement since then.
Luca’s Early Battle and Support From the Timberwolves
Luca was just five years old when diagnosed with leukemia and six when he met the Timberwolves last season, according to The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski. His mother credited baseball with helping him endure hospitalizations and chemotherapy.
“Never, ever did we dream that Ant would put it on and be like, ‘You know what, buddy, I’m gonna wear this for you,'”
Lacey Wright said to Krawczynski.
“It’s just been amazing, and Luca watches and he loves that. He talks about him daily.”
Impact on Timberwolves Team Dynamics
Several Timberwolves players, including Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Mike Conley, have acknowledged that meeting Luca provided motivation for them and Edwards during the 2024-25 season. The team, now ranked fifth in the Western Conference with a 36-23 record, is preparing for a road game against the Los Angeles Clippers scheduled for 10 p.m. ET Thursday.
Significance of the Wristband and What Comes Next
The orange wristband symbolizes hope and resilience, with Edwards wearing it as a constant reminder of Luca’s courage. This story of inspiration highlights the deep connections sports can create between players and fans, fueling determination on and off the court. As the Timberwolves continue their playoff push, Edwards’ tribute to Luca remains a powerful symbol of strength and community support.
