Darius Garland is scheduled to make his Los Angeles Clippers debut on Monday in a game against the Golden State Warriors, nearly a month after being acquired from the Cleveland Cavaliers in the blockbuster trade that sent superstar guard James Harden to Cleveland. The announcement of Garland’s return was reported by NBA insider Chris Haynes.
Injuries Have Delayed Garland’s Season Appearance
Garland’s season has been hampered by injuries, which have limited his availability throughout the year. He missed the first seven games due to recovery from offseason toe surgery and has been sidelined since January 14 with a toe sprain. These physical setbacks contributed to uncertainty about his readiness prior to the trade.
Garland’s Perspective on the Trade and Future Prospects
Following the trade, Garland openly discussed his expectations about leaving Cleveland and looked forward to his new chapter with the Clippers. In an interview with Andscape’s Marc Spears on February 20, Garland acknowledged that his departure was inevitable, either at the trade deadline or later in the summer. He shared,
“It was going to happen regardless, either at the [trade] deadline or this summer. [My agent] Rich [Paul] had that conversation with me last summer,” Garland said. “But yeah, the toe definitely had a factor in it. They didn’t know if I was going to be healthy for this season, which I will be. But they thought that James had something that I didn’t, I believe. He has experience in playoffs and All-Star numbers still to this day, even though he wasn’t an All-Star this year. But yeah, they want to win right now. They have a group, too. And I guess I really wasn’t part of the plan.”?Darius Garland, Point Guard
He also expressed optimism about his role in Los Angeles, adding,
“But now, I’m over here in a really good situation. I have the ball in my hand a lot more where I could do me a little bit more. I have another superstar [in Leonard] next to me. I can go get it as well.”?Darius Garland, Point Guard
Garland’s Performance History and Clippers’ Current Standings
Before the trade, Garland played 26 games with the Cavaliers this season, averaging 18.0 points and 6.9 assists per game while shooting 36% from three-point range. Last season, he earned his second All-Star nod, posting averages of 20.6 points per game and a 40.1% three-point shooting rate.

The Clippers currently hold a 27–31 record, placing them 10th in the Western Conference. They sit five and a half games ahead of the Memphis Grizzlies, the first team outside the play-in tournament spots. However, the Clippers are coming off three consecutive losses since their exhilarating victory over the Denver Nuggets in their first game after the All-Star break.
Team Rebuilding Amid Trade Moves
This season, Los Angeles has embraced a rebuilding strategy, especially evident at the February 5 trade deadline. Alongside trading for Garland, the Clippers sent Ivica Zubac to the Indiana Pacers, receiving Bennedict Mathurin and two first-round draft picks in return. These moves marked a significant shakeup as the team moves toward restructuring its roster around younger talent.
Kawhi Leonard’s Role and Upcoming Games
Amid these changes, Kawhi Leonard has elevated his game, averaging a career-best 28 points per game this season. With Garland joining the lineup, Leonard will soon have the opportunity to play alongside the franchise’s prospective point guard. The Clippers are set to face the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday before Garland makes his debut versus the Warriors on Monday.
