Jaden Ivey, 24, was acquired by the Chicago Bulls just before the February 3 trade deadline in a three-team deal, with hopes high that he would revive the explosive style he showed earlier despite recent health challenges. The Bulls saw potential for Ivey to contribute significantly after his previous season-ending left fibula fracture in January 2025 and an arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in October 2025, which sidelined him for the first 15 games of the season while with Detroit.
During his short four-game stretch with Chicago, Ivey averaged 11.5 points and four assists while playing nearly 29 minutes per game, a notable increase from his time in Detroit where he posted 8.2 points and 1.6 assists over about 17 minutes in 33 games. Despite this, Bulls coach Billy Donovan noted that Ivey initially reported no knee pain but has recently developed soreness that requires rehabilitation to rebuild leg strength before he can be evaluated again.
Donovan remarked on Ivey’s condition:
“Certainly, when he came here and, you know, he started getting more minutes — in the first few games his minutes were in the 30s — you could just see he wasn’t like stopping, starting. He didn’t have that explosiveness that you saw when you watched him play.”
He added,
I think there’s a feeling that if he can get some of the strength back, then he can get back to where he was athletically,
highlighting the cautious optimism surrounding Ivey’s recovery while emphasizing the importance of regaining his prior athleticism.

Zach Collins’ Year Ends Prematurely Due to Injury
Zach Collins will miss the remainder of the 2025-2026 season following surgery on a right toe injury, which adds to an already injury-plagued year. Collins had previously missed the first 21 games recovering from a broken hand bone and only managed to appear in 10 contests for the Bulls this season, averaging 9.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 18.4 minutes per game. His absence leaves a significant gap in the team’s rotation as they continue their season push.
Coach Donovan expressed empathy for Collins’ difficult situation, stating,
I think it’s been really hard for him personally. I think he did everything he wanted to go. Surgery is always the last resort,
underscoring the difficult nature of the decision and the personal toll injuries have taken on Collins.
Implications for the Bulls’ Season Outlook
The injury setbacks for both Ivey and Collins deliver a serious blow to the Bulls as they navigate a critical stretch of the season. Ivey’s ongoing recovery from knee issues and Collins’ early exit due to toe surgery reduce the team’s depth and athletic firepower, challenging coach Billy Donovan’s rotation options. Their absences come at a time when maintaining competitiveness is vital for Chicago’s campaign.
The Bulls will need effective rehabilitation plans and possibly strategic moves to offset these losses if they hope to sustain momentum. Monitoring Ivey’s progress as he rebuilds his leg strength will be key, alongside managing Collins’ recovery timeline, to determine when either player can contribute again. These developments add uncertainty but also emphasize the resiliency required for Chicago’s roster moving forward.
