Payton Sandfort, former Iowa basketball standout, has signed a two-way contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder, according to his agency’s announcement to ESPN. The agreement marks a significant step in Sandfort’s professional career, allowing him to play both with the Thunder and its G League affiliate as the team continues its strong 2025 season.
Career Highlights and Achievements at Iowa
Standing 6-foot-8 and hailing from Waukee, Sandfort made a notable impact during his college career at Iowa City. He became just the second player in the program’s history to surpass 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, and 250 three-point field goals. He also holds the program record for free-throw accuracy at 89.6 percent, having converted 266 out of 297 attempts. Sandfort ended his college tenure ranked 11th in career scoring with 1,619 points and second in career three-pointers with 271. He started in the last 67 games of his collegiate career and scored double-digit points in 74 games, including 34 games with 20 or more points.
Role and Expectations with the Thunder
After going undrafted in June, Sandfort joined Oklahoma City’s NBA and G League system, showcasing his talents with the Blue team. The two-way contract allows him to split playing time between the Thunder and their G League affiliate, with eligibility to be promoted to the standard roster. While two-way players cannot participate in the playoffs unless promoted, this deal offers Sandfort the opportunity to compete for a spot on a team that currently holds the NBA’s best record at 47-15 and is the reigning league champion.
Contract Details and Financial Terms
Under the terms of a two-way deal, Sandfort will be one of three additional players beyond the 15-man roster allowed during the regular season. The salary for two-way players is set at $636,435 for the entire 2025-26 season, approximately half of the NBA’s minimum salary. With 20 games remaining this regular season, Sandfort’s earnings will be prorated accordingly.
