Stephen A. Smith Slams Draymond Green’s Defense of Luka Trade

More than a year after the Dallas Mavericks traded NBA star Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers, the move remains one of the most debated in recent basketball history. The trade sent Dončić away in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick, sparking immediate outrage directed at then-Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison, who faced severe criticism for what was widely viewed as a heavily lopsided deal. The criticism surrounding the trade continues to fuel conversation within NBA circles and among fans.

Draymond Green Responds to Media Criticism of Nico Harrison

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green publicly defended Harrison’s rationale for the trade, highlighting how the media originally doubted Harrison’s explanations. Green pointed out on The Draymond Green Show that many who initially condemned the trade are now repeating the same reasons Harrison gave as justification. He stated,

“So many people crushed Nico for the reasons that he gave [for trading Dončić],”

and added,

“Now, when I turn on the TV, all I see is the media that crushed Nico Harrison, which essentially aided in him getting fired, regurgitating the same things that Nico Harrison was saying.”

In his defense of Harrison, Green emphasized that the trade was primarily motivated by Dallas’ desire to strengthen its defense. Despite this, the backlash prompted by the deal ultimately resulted in Harrison’s dismissal from his role as Mavericks general manager following a disappointing 3-8 start to the 2025-26 NBA season. The team has struggled through injuries and currently holds a 21-39 record.

Continued Criticism and Media Backlash

Green also called attention to the lack of apologies from critics.

“I haven’t seen one person come out and say, ‘Hey Nico, I’m sorry for the things I said about you when you made that move because I just said the same things out of my mouth,’”

he said. He drew a distinction between the media’s criticism of Harrison and any commentary on Dončić’s talent, stating,

“This has nothing to do with Luka and everything to do with the media and Nico Harrison.”

Green argued that the personal attacks on Harrison were unwarranted, despite the widespread belief that the trade was a major misstep.

Stephen A. Smith Challenges Draymond Green’s Defense

ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith rebutted Green’s defense of Harrison on the March 2, 2026, episode of First Take, declaring that Green’s portrayal of the media’s reaction was inaccurate and unfair.

“I think that in this particular instance, Draymond Green is being incredibly unfair,”

Smith said. He highlighted the rarity and value of a player like Dončić and questioned the premise of the trade, asking,

“If Luka Dončić had been put on the open market by Nico Harrison, can we even sit here and imagine the assets that would have been offered for him?”

Smith emphasized that the criticism was directed specifically at the trade decision rather than Harrison’s entire tenure or personal character.

“I didn’t see anybody that hated on Nico Harrison as a person, as an executive, or the job that he did in Dallas overall. They were talking about this one deal, which was egregious and will forever stain him,”

Smith asserted. He went on to explain that this trade alone has severely damaged Harrison’s reputation, making it unlikely he will hold another NBA executive position in the future.

“So much so, it is highly unlikely he will ever get a job as a basketball executive in the NBA again because of this one deal. That’s how bad it appears to be. Draymond knows that. He has to know that, so to label it any differently, I respectfully disagree with him.”

Dončić’s Performance Highlights Trade Impact

Since the trade, Luka Dončić has continued to impress, currently leading the NBA in scoring with averages of 32.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 8.6 assists per game. His dominance on the court underscores the magnitude of the departure and why the trade remains a source of anguish and frustration for the Mavericks and their fans. The rarity of trading a player of Dončić’s caliber makes the ramifications of the deal even more significant within the league and beyond.

Legacy and Uncertain Future for Nico Harrison

Following his dismissal from the Mavericks, Nico Harrison remains unemployed according to his social media bio, and his future in basketball management is unclear. Despite the ongoing debates, Harrison’s name will undoubtedly be linked to one of the most startling trades in NBA history, a transaction that continues to evoke strong emotions among players, analysts, and fans alike.
