Cavs Hold 4th Annual Bow Tie Game Honoring Nick Gilbert

CLEVELAND — On Sunday, March 8, the Cleveland Cavaliers will once again use their home court to honor a cause that transcends basketball. The fourth annual Cleveland Cavaliers Bow Tie Game will kick off at 1 p.m. at Rocket Arena, bringing together fans, families, and advocates to highlight neurofibromatosis (NF), a condition that deeply affected Nick Gilbert, the late son of Cavaliers Chairman Dan Gilbert and Jennifer Gilbert.

This event marks a continuation of the Cavaliers’ commitment to shine a spotlight on NF, a genetic disorder characterized by tumors on nerve pathways that can cause blindness, deafness, bone deformities, chronic pain, and cancer. NF1, the most prevalent form, affects roughly one in every 2,500 births worldwide.

Nick Gilbert’s Legacy Inspires Awareness and Support

Nick Gilbert, who battled neurofibromatosis until his passing in May 2023 at age 27, became a cherished figure within the Cavaliers community. He gained recognition during the 2011 NBA Draft Lottery, where his memorable phrase, “What’s Not to Like?” became a beloved motto for the franchise. His iconic bow tie symbolized his dedication to raising awareness about NF and fostering hope for those affected.

Alongside The Gilly Project, the Gilbert Family Foundation, and NFX, the Cavaliers organize the Bow Tie Game each year to honor Nick’s memory. The event supports NF research efforts and offers recognition to families living with the disease, turning a basketball game into an occasion for inspiration and advocacy.

Special Activities and Fan Engagement at Rocket Arena

This year’s Celebration Night, themed as a Classic Edition event, will feature multiple activities designed to engage the crowd and highlight the NF community. Fans in attendance will receive rally towels emblazoned with the “What’s Not to Like?” phrase. On the court, participants will compete in the Tie a Bow Tie Race and test their knowledge with live bow tie-themed trivia.

Players will show their solidarity by donning warm-up jackets accented with the bow tie symbol, while mascots, hosts, and entertainment teams will incorporate bow tie-themed attire throughout the arena. A memorable moment will occur at the end of the third quarter with the Glow Tie tribute, inviting fans to illuminate a bow tie outline in the stands. Attendees are encouraged to wear bow ties to further demonstrate their support.

Fundraising Efforts through Merchandise and Partnerships

Fans will have the opportunity to purchase bow tie-inspired apparel and accessories at Center Court inside Rocket Arena, at Pinecrest, or online through the Cavaliers’ official shop. Additionally, a bow tie option will be offered at the MyMoments personalization kiosk within the arena. Proceeds from these sales, along with contributions from Gilly’s sports bar located on Rocket Arena’s Loudville level, will be donated to NFX to aid ongoing NF research and support.

The annual Bow Tie Game not only honors Nick Gilbert’s enduring spirit but also amplifies the fight against a challenging disease affecting families worldwide. By combining community engagement, heartfelt tribute, and fundraising, the Cavaliers continue to position this event as a beacon of hope and awareness moving forward.
