Austin Reaves Admits No Defense Against Zion’s Power Run

The Los Angeles Lakers faced the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday night in a crucial game for their standing in the Western Conference. Currently holding sixth place, the Lakers needed a win to maintain their position and keep a buffer over the seventh spot. The team secured a 110-101 victory, with every starter scoring in double digits, including Austin Reaves, who contributed 15 points despite struggling with his shooting.

After the game, Reaves was asked about defending Pelicans star Zion Williamson, who led his team with 24 points. Reaves was candid about his inability to effectively guard Williamson, especially when it came to physical plays like taking a charge. Acknowledging Williamson’s size and speed, Reaves described the challenge of stopping him when he charges toward the basket.

Don’t be scared to get out of the way. I was terrified. There was no way in hell I was taking a charge. He was running too fast. I just kind of slid out the way let him have a layup

During the first half, Reaves found himself in a situation where he could have tried to take a charge from Williamson but chose to avoid it. Given that Williamson weighs 284 pounds and stands 6’6”, the physical threat was significant. Considering Reaves’ history of injuries this season, the decision to step aside rather than risk further harm was a practical one. However, Reaves noted he would make a different choice in a playoff game, where the stakes are higher and physical toughness becomes paramount.

Lakers’ Defensive Struggles and Playoff Hurdles Ahead

The Lakers face a challenging schedule going forward and are eager to avoid the play-in tournament at the end of the season. Currently, they have the 10th toughest remaining schedule in the NBA, which complicates their push for a secure playoff spot. Defensively, the team has struggled all season, ranking ninth worst in the league. Holding adversaries to around 100 points per game is vital to their chances for continued success.

Reaves is working to regain his rhythm after missing 26 games this season due to injuries. His health is critical for the Lakers, who rely heavily on key players to stay on the court if they hope to contend for a championship. With Reaves’ free agency expected after next season and LeBron James’ team option looming, significant decisions about the team’s future lineup could emerge soon.

Don’t be scared to get out of the way. I was terrified. There was no way in hell I was taking a charge. He was running too fast. Once again, I was terrified, so I just kind of slid out the way let him have a layup.
