The Brooklyn Nets, struggling with a nine-game losing streak and focused on ethical tanking, have not been handing out developmental minutes lightly. Rookie wing Drake Powell was sent to their G League affiliate, the Long Island Nets, on February 27 after showing signs of fatigue during his NBA rookie season. This marked his fourth assignment to Long Island, where he played his fourth game by Wednesday morning to regain confidence and rhythm.
Initial Performance and NBA Playing Time Before Recent Decline
Earlier, Powell participated in two games of the G League’s Tip-Off Tournament in November, where he averaged seven points, five rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.5 steals in 28.5 minutes per game despite some struggles with efficiency. Following this, Powell appeared to have secured a rotation spot with Brooklyn, averaging nearly 20 minutes off the bench from early November through late December. He even enjoyed an eight-game stretch in the rotation until late January.
Declining Numbers Led to G League Reassignment
After moving back into a reserve role, Powell’s numbers declined over his last six NBA outings, averaging just 4.2 points, 1.5 rebounds, and one assist in 18.7 minutes per game. His shooting efficiency dropped sharply, with only 33.3% field goal accuracy and a 15.4% success rate from three-point range. To prevent further struggles in a competitive playoff chase environment, the Nets opted to send him back down to Long Island to recover his form.
Strong G League Performances Highlight Renewed Aggression
Powell’s time with the Long Island Nets has already shown promise. In his latest game, he delivered 21 points on 9-for-16 shooting, added three rebounds, and blocked one shot. His offensive assertiveness improved notably as he attacked the basket aggressively and confidently drilled three of five attempts from beyond the arc.
In his initial game of this assignment, Powell posted 13 points, seven rebounds, and three assists while shooting 50% from both the field and three-point range, with most of his scoring coming early, including 10 first-quarter points.
Rookie Adapts by Applying Offensive Pressure
One challenge Powell has faced in Brooklyn is asserting himself alongside more experienced and talented teammates. However, during his G League stint, Powell has embraced a more aggressive approach, actively creating opportunities rather than waiting for the offense to come to him, putting consistent pressure on opposing defenses.
Return to NBA Rotation Looks Promising
As the regular season approaches its conclusion, a return to Brooklyn’s lineup appears likely for the 20-year-old. His productive time with the Long Island Nets has contributed to regaining confidence and form, which could translate into steadier contributions once back in NBA action.
