In his 23rd NBA season, Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James continues to redefine the sport, recently surpassing a long-standing record. On Thursday, during a game against the Denver Nuggets, James made a turnaround fadeaway shot that propelled him past Lakers great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on the all-time field goals list, marking a new milestone in his illustrious career. This achievement adds another chapter to James’ impressive legacy and highlights his sustained excellence in the league.
Reflecting on the Record and Its Meaning
James expressed deep humility about joining the ranks of basketball’s greatest players.
“Just to be able to link my name to being mentioned with some of the greatest to ever play this game has always been humbling and a pretty cool thing,”
James said after the game, according to ESPN. Growing up, he admired many of the all-time greats and always aspired to position himself among them.
“I grew up watching, reading [about], idolizing a lot of the greats, and if I ever was able to be part of the NBA, I wanted to put myself in position that I can be named with some of the greats by doing something right. So it’s pretty cool.”
Evolution of a Signature Move
The key shot that secured James’ new record — the turnaround fadeaway — was a skill he consciously added to his arsenal following the 2011 NBA Finals defeat to the Dallas Mavericks.
“It’s one of my patented shots,”
James explained.
“It’s something I’ve worked on throughout my career. So to be able to have that ability to make that shot is pretty cool.”
This shot not only symbolizes his technical growth but also reflects his determination to adapt and improve over time.
Maintaining Focus Beyond Records
Despite the historic nature of the accomplishment, James emphasized that breaking records was never his primary goal.
“Obviously, it’s a pretty cool feat, but it’s hard for me to kind of wrap my head around it or what it looks like,”
he said.
“It’s something that I never had a goal to have that record. I came into this league understanding that I had to start from scratch. As the No. 1 player in the country, I had to start from scratch and get myself up that plateau of being the No. 1 player in the world again. So that was my only mindset.”
Legacy Among the Greatest in Basketball
James recognizes the rarity and gravity of achieving such a position in basketball history, acknowledging the countless players who have competed in the NBA.
“I don’t know how many players have played in the NBA, but it’s the greatest players in the world. And for my name to be mentioned with the greats and be at the top of it is awesome.”
His achievement reinforces his stature not only as a dominant player today but as one of the sport’s all-time legends.
