Bobby Portis, a forward for the Milwaukee Bucks, has expressed uncertainty about Giannis Antetokounmpo’s continuing tenure with the team, rating the chances at an even five out of ten. Speaking recently on Run It Back, presented by FanDuel TV, Portis highlighted that while the desire to win remains strong, the ultimate decision depends heavily on the Bucks’ management and roster moves.
I’m at a five, bro. I’m right in the middle. … For real, it’s up in the air, man,
Portis said.
Obviously, just being here, our goal just isn’t to make the play-in, right? The goal isn’t to just make the playoffs. Since I’ve been here, since 2020 during the pandemic, the goal has always been championship.
Roster Decisions and Front Office Strategy Create Uncertainty
Portis emphasized that the uncertainty surrounding Antetokounmpo’s future is not driven by the player’s commitment but rather hinges on the moves the Bucks’ general manager Jon Horst and his staff decide to make. With questions expected to heighten around the upcoming NBA Draft, Portis admitted he does not know what enhancements will be made to strengthen the team’s championship prospects.
I don’t know what Jon and his staff are going to put together to make the roster better, make us better, so we can compete for championships next year,
Portis said. I don’t know that.

Giannis’ Current Performance and Contract Status
Antetokounmpo is currently recovering from a right calf strain and missed a recent game against Orlando, but he is cleared to return soon. In the three games since returning from injury, he has averaged 23.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 1.7 steals in 26 minutes per game. Throughout the season, over 33 games, his averages stand at 27.5 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game.
Contractually, Giannis is secured through the 2026-27 season, with a player option for 2027-28, which could make him a free agent during the summer of 2027. He will be eligible in October for a four-year max extension worth approximately $275 million, which only Milwaukee can immediately offer under the collective bargaining agreement.
Team Adjustments and the Pursuit of Championship Contention
Since Antetokounmpo’s arrival during the pandemic in 2020, the Bucks have focused on building a title-contending roster. Recently, the franchise added Myles Turner and Kyle Kuzma, while retaining Portis under the guidance of head coach Doc Rivers. The franchise’s current record stands at 27-36, positioning them likely for a top-10 pick in the 2026 draft, along with some salary cap exceptions that Horst will use to improve the roster before the extension window opens.
Portis noted that the narrative linking Antetokounmpo’s future to the Bucks’ success arises every season the team falls short of a championship, and he expects the same situation this offseason with heightened speculation around Giannis.
Emerging Speculation on Potential Moves and Rival Interest
Rumors have surfaced suggesting a possible blockbuster trade involving Giannis Antetokounmpo moving to the Los Angeles Lakers. However, concerns have been raised that acquiring the star player could negatively impact the Lakers’ depth and salary cap flexibility, presenting significant challenges for their roster construction.
