Malaki Branham Signs G League Deal with Cavaliers Affiliate

Malaki Branham has signed a G League contract and will play for the Cleveland Charge, the developmental team affiliated with the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line. Branham entered free agency after being waived by the Charlotte Hornets shortly after the February trade deadline.

Journey Through Trades and Limited Playing Time

Earlier this season, the Washington Wizards had planned to include Branham in a complex multi-team trade to send him to the Dallas Mavericks as part of the Anthony Davis deal. However, the Mavericks later revised the transaction, resulting in Branham being sent to Charlotte in a swap involving Tyus Jones. During his time with Washington, the 22-year-old guard played in 28 games, all off the bench, averaging 4.6 points and 1.6 rebounds in 9.8 minutes per contest.

Performance and Contract Details

Branham recorded shooting splits of .473 from the field, .378 from three-point range, and .824 from the free-throw line this season, while completing the final guaranteed year of his rookie contract, worth just under $5 million. Selected 20th overall in the 2022 NBA Draft following a strong freshman season at Ohio State, Branham spent his first two years with the San Antonio Spurs. His playing time decreased last season before he was traded to Washington in July.

Context and Expectations Moving Forward

Signing with the Cavaliers’ G League affiliate offers Branham an opportunity to showcase his skills and rebuild value within the NBA system. The move could be significant in providing him the platform to earn another chance at the NBA level while developing with Cleveland’s organization. How Branham performs with the Charge will likely determine his next steps in professional basketball.
