Jets Eye Star LB Over QB in Hunt for Justin Fields’ Replacement

The New York Jets face an urgent need to find a replacement for Justin Fields as they aim to rebuild their offense. However, according to ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr., the team is leaning toward strengthening its defense rather than drafting a quarterback early in a weak quarterback class.

Fans in New York expect the team to select a quarterback with their No. 2 overall pick, but many experts believe no top passer remains on the board after Fernando Mendoza is chosen. Some consider Alabama’s Ty Simpson a risky choice. The Jets might instead wait to pick a quarterback in later rounds or defer their quarterback search until 2027, when they could have three first-round selections available.

Defensive Struggles Highlight Need for Pass Rush Improvement

One of the Jets’ critical challenges this season was their pass rush, ranking 31st with just 26 sacks. Despite investing first-round picks in edge rushers Jermaine Johnson in 2022 and Will McDonald IV in 2023, the pass rush has yet to make a significant impact.

To address this, the Jets are reportedly considering Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese, known for both traditional linebacker duties and effective edge rushing. Reese has been praised as a potential game-changer capable of revitalizing New York’s defensive front.

In his Monday analysis, Mel Kiper Jr. described Reese as

“built in the Micah Parsons/Abdul Carter mold, with elite speed and powerful hands off the edge and high potential once he settles in as a full-time edge rusher.”

Reese had a breakout 2025 season, establishing himself as one of college football’s premier defensive players. He closed the year with 69 total tackles, including 10 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks over 14 games. His performance earned him consensus All-American honors and the title of Big Ten Linebacker of the Year.

Jets coach Aaron Glenn, who has a defensive background, may value Reese’s versatility and ability to influence both the run defense and the pass rush as he plots the franchise’s rebuild.

Debate Over Quarterback Options Intensifies

The Jets’ quarterback situation remains unstable after a disappointing season under Aaron Glenn’s leadership. Garrett Podell of CBS Sports suggests that Kyler Murray, the Arizona Cardinals quarterback, could provide the stability the Jets need at the position.

“The Jets can’t do what they did in the first year of Aaron Glenn’s coaching tenure, which was start three quarterbacks for at least four games,” Podell wrote on Jan. 27. “So where could the Jets turn to get a stabilizing quarterback? How about two-time Pro Bowl quarterback Kyler Murray?”

Murray signed a five-year, $230.5 million contract in 2022, making him one of the highest-paid players in the NFL. Podell added that Murray

could give the Jets offense a much-needed floor to build up from.

Looking Ahead to the Next Steps in Rebuilding

The Jets remain in a difficult position as they balance the quarterback search with the urgent need to improve their defense. Opting for a top defensive prospect like Arvell Reese may bolster a struggling pass rush and add versatility to the linebacker corps. Meanwhile, the uncertainty regarding a clear-cut quarterback option in this draft could push the Jets to either take a later-round quarterback or wait until they have more draft capital in 2027.

Coach Aaron Glenn’s defensive expertise and the focus on key defensive players suggest that the Jets are emphasizing building a stronger foundation before solidifying their offense around a new quarterback. The decisions made in the upcoming draft and offseason will be crucial in shaping the team’s prospects for the 2024 season and beyond.
